Roger L. Steen

May 25, 1946 - April 17, 2022

When someone you love becomes a memory the memory becomes a treasure ~ Roger L. Steen, loving father, son, brother and grandfather “Poppy – Duker” as he was affectionately named by 2 of his grandchildren, Mindy and Cody. Roger was born on May 25, 1945 and at the age of 75 went home to be with his personal Savior, our Lord, Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022. He was predeceased by his son, Carlton L. Steen; his mother Coy L. Steen; father C. Lee Steen; grandson Cody J. Brown; and his 4-legged companion Duke. Roger was a well respected in the construction community. He helped shape many landscapes in the Southern Tier of New York and Pennsylvania. Roger had the first Hydroseeder in the area – and it was used to complete the Oakdale Mall. He was a contractor for the Town Square Mall. Roger operated Marshland Construction for many years. Roger loved family and as he advanced in age, family became more important. He treasured Sunday and holiday dinners and getting together for any reason. Roger is survived by his 3 daughters: Jamie Cole, Christie Lokietek (Matthew), Lisa Bryant (Ken); and daughter-in-law Denise (Kanabroski) Tenney (Chris). His brother Doug Steen (Bonnie); Nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren. Roger’s daughters want to extend special thanks to Donna Nezelek, Sherrie (Nezelek) Smales (Brad), Tommy Nezelek (Pam), Mossy and Tony. A special thank you to Michel for being the “Rock” Roger was a veteran of the US Army, having served during the Vietnam War era. Our father loved his life. He was always busy – no moss ever grew under his feet. Roger, up until his death, had plans. He enjoyed operating heavy equipment and especially building ponds for all to enjoy. We have so many good memories; our father’s last endeavor was to construct a mobile plant nursery. Roger loved to garden and always looked forward to the first tomato sandwich of the season. Our father was devastated when he lost his son and the recent loss of his grandson, Cody. This reinforced his thoughts on family get togethers. Life is fragile and fleeting. All family and his many friends are welcomed to join us in celebrating his life, his story, his laughter, and his legacy. A period of calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 27th from 4 – 5 pm at the South Apalachin Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow at 5pm followed by a meal at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the South Apalachin Baptist Church, 4116 Pennsylvania Ave, Apalachin, NY 13732 in loving memory of Roger L. Steen. Memories and condolences may be shared in his guest book at www.sutfinfuneralchapel.com
