A life well lived is a precious gift, of hope and strength and grace, from someone who has made our world a brighter, better place. Abram L. Nichols, 96, of Ellis Creek Road, Waverly passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Abe as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, was born on March 22, 1918 in Nichols, NY a son of the late Celin and Lena (Latimer) Nichols. He attended school in Barton until the 8th grade ~ leaving school to assist his father in the operation of the family farm. A hard working and dedicated man, Abe was employed at the Erie Rail Road, worked at the freight yards in Hornell and later retired from American Bridge following over 32 years of service. In addition, he owned and operated a coal business in Barton and a garbage service business in Nichols. On November 14, 1937 in Canisteo, NY he married Bertha Stage and together they have shared nearly 77 years of marriage. Abe treasured his family, he enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, boating, camping and listening to bluegrass music. Although his greatest pleasure was being surrounded by his nine children, 28 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren, and 44 great great grandchildren. He will be forever remembered and forever missed. Abe is survived by his wife Bertha; his children: Barbara and John Merrill; George and Virginia Nichols; Gary and Linda Nichols; Lois and Frank Wasielewski; Fred and Joan Nichols; Richard and Cooki Nichols; Dorothy and Donald Schopf; daughter-in-law Bonnie Nichols; sisters-in-law: Rosetta Nichols; Lois Stage and Beverly Kemp; twenty eight grandchildren, sixty-six great grandchildren, forty-four great great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Abe was predeceased by his parents, daughter Joan, his son Jack; grandson Jack Nichols, Jr.,brother Paul and sisters: Dorothy, Hilda, Eva and Beverly. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation and time of sharing memories on Saturday, September 27th from 11 - 1 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. Funeral services and a celebration of a life well lived for Abe will follow at 1 pm with Pastor John Merrill, Pastor Gregory Merrill, Pastor Jefferey Merrill, Pastor Wesley Nichols and Pastor Frank Wasielewski, Jr., officiating. Interment and prayers of committal will follow in the Emory Chapel Cemetery.
