Lulubelle "Lu" Harris, a loving and kind woman who brought joy to her family and friends, passed away on May 28, 2023, at Susquehanna Nursing Home in Johnson City, NY. Lu was born at home in Nichols, NY on February 20, 1942 a daughter of the late George H. and Lorena E. (Ockerman) Layer. Lu was known for her kindness, generosity, and devotion to her family and friends she touched the lives of many throughout her 81 years. As Helen Keller once said, "What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Lu's loved ones will forever cherish the memories they shared with her.   She was a proud graduate of Tioga Central High School class of 1960. For many years, Lu worked at the Endicott Johnson Shoe Factory until its closure. She then transitioned to Key Punch Center and later became a sales associate at Phila Sales.


Lu was the cherished sister of Shirley Fox, brother-in-law Lester Fox, Jr., nieces and nephews Robyn Bruder, Wendy and Scott Rifenberg, Tammy and Kevin Warner, Roxanne Fox, great-nieces and nephews Jesseca and Peter Ferreri, Kimberly Fox and fiancé Tylin Firestone, and Cody Fox and Katie Portner., as well as great-great-nephews CJ and Connor Ferrei. She also leaves behind many cousins and special friends, including Gloria Peterson and the family of Cathy Campbell. Lu was predeceased and welcomed into heaven by her parents; her husband, Ronald R. Harris; infant brother, Richard John Layer; brother, Howard Layer; sisters: Arlene Layer and Beverly (Otto) Scott; and close friend, Cathy Campbell.



Lu had a variety of interests that brought joy to her life. She loved listening to Elvis, cheering on the Yankees, and collecting Betty Boop memorabilia. She enjoyed completing crossword puzzles and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Endicott. Lu always looked forward to attending the Nichols Senior Citizens meetings and spending time surrounded by her family. Her greatest enjoyment, however, was being a pen pal to her great-great-nephews, CJ and Connor. Lu adored the boys and cherished their special bond. She delighted in sending them small gifts, thoughtful gestures, and messages of love and gratitude on holidays. The boys loved corresponding with their "Aunt Lu" and would send her artwork, valentines, photos, and even stickers. Lu kept everything she received from them and rejoiced in their achievements.


In honor of Lu's legacy, a memorial college fund has been established for her cherished pen pals, CJ and Connor. This fund serves as a testament to the impact she had on their lives and will help ensure they have the opportunity to grow and thrive. Lu's memory will live on through the love and support she provided to her family and friends. Lu's life was a beautiful testament to the power of love, kindness, and generosity. As Maya Angelou once said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Lu's memory will live on in the hearts and minds of those who were blessed to know her.


We celebrate and remember the life of Lulubelle "Lu" Harris and the love and joy she brought to all who knew her. May her spirit continue to shine brightly in our hearts and memories.
