Softly in the morning, you heard a gentle call, you took the hand God offered you and quietly left us all….Our loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend Betty Irene Brown, 87, of Windham, went to her heavenly home on Friday morning, October 25, 2013 and was reunited with her husband Hugh. Betty was born on January 13, 1926, the second daughter of Wilton and Catherine Robinson. She married her only love, Hugh S. Brown on February 24, 1945. They spent many happy years raising their five children and enjoyed good times with friends and extended family, until his death on October 14, 1993. Betty was an active member of many organizations over the years including ~ Windham Ladies Aid, Nichols Senior Citizens, Oak Hill Corral and Windham Ambulance. She attended the North Orwell Union Church, and for over 40 years Betty served as the Windham Township Tax Collector. Many loved to pay their taxes in person for that allowed them to have a nice visit with Betty. Betty loved her home and having it filled with family. She enjoyed cooking, baking, birthdays and holidays. Betty spent many hours doing crafts, embroidering and plastic needlework. She will be greatly missed by her children and their spouses ~ Myron and Peggy Brown of Ulster, Stanley and Linda Brown of Windham; Bill and Carolyne Brown of Vestal, Patricia Lohmeyer and Allen Oakes of Vestal, Ronnie and Karen Brown of North Orwell. She was blessed with eleven grandchildren: Becky (David) Birdsall, Susan Brown (Michelle Michaels), Tina (Bob) Lewis, Stacey Brown, Charles Brown (Armonda Alverze), Billie Jo (Paul) Robbins, Tammy (Tracy) Babcock, Carol (Duane) Waltman, Charles (Cindy) Lohmeyer, Erica (Jack) Hansen, and Jamie Brown, four step grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren. Her siblings: Edna Springer, who lovingly cared for Betty the past nine months; Marjorie Garland of California; Joan and LaVerne Sollick of Lancaster, PA; James Robinson of Erie, PA. Several nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Betty was predeceased by her parents, husband Hugh, her older sister Doris Maxwell, a great granddaughter Samantha Swartz and many close friends that left a mark in her life. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of reflection on Betty's life on Sunday, October 27th from 3 to 5 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. Funeral services and a celebration of her life will be held on Monday, October 28th at 11 am at the funeral chapel with Rev. Jeffrey Wilkinson officiating. Interment and prayers of committal will follow in the Nichols Cemetery.
