of Nichols


William "Bill" Dell Steele, a beloved patriarch, skilled machinist, and talented woodworker, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2023, in Sayre, PA following a period of declining health. Born on July 8, 1942, in Harvey, Iowa, Bill's life was marked by kindness, wisdom, and selflessness.


Bill was predeceased by his parents, Otta Steele,  Dora (Hafer) and stepfather Joseph Wallner; his wife, Loretta (Couture) Steele, and siblings: Richard Frye, John Steele, Paul Wallner, and Dona Saltzgiver; stepchildren: Susan and Eric; grandchildren: Ashley Dixon and grandson Eric J. Ahlstrom, Jr.


His memory will be cherished, and his legacy carried on by his sons, Robert James Steele and John Benjamin Steele, stepchildren Michael Ahlstrom, Brenda Ahlstrom. His brothers Joseph (Linda) Wallner, Ludwig "Art" ( Colleen), Michael (Mary) Wallner. His sisters-in-law Sandra Steele, Sallie Uetwiller and Jackie Wallner, brother-in-law and sister-in-law David and Diana Couture. Bill was a cherished grandfather to: Keith Steele; Kara (Matt) Vinson, Cortney Dixon, Bryan Ahlstrom, Chelsea Smith, Alisha (Noah) Sackett, Jessa Ahlstrom, Amanda Moore, Megan Ahlstrom and Emily Alhstrom. Great-grandfather to: Mason, Benjamin, Kayla, Tyler, Tatiana, James, Jr., Timber-Lynn, Hannah, Meadow, Haley Mae, Draven, Isis, Jazzmyn, Michael, and Erica will remember him as a gentle and loving figure who enriched their lives with his wisdom and kindness. Uncle Bill will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and their families (among them his favorite, Kim).


Bill proudly served his country in the US Army from 1959 to 1962. His military service instilled in him a deep sense of duty and discipline that would guide him throughout his life. Bill embarked on a successful career as a machinist for Endicott Precision. His knowledge and skill in this field were widely respected by his colleagues and peers.


Beyond his professional life, Bill was a man of many talents and passions. He was a gifted woodworker, creating beautiful pieces that were treasured by his loved ones. His vegetable garden was a testament to his patience and dedication, and many looked forward to its bounty.  Bill's life was a testament to the power of love, the value of hard work, and the importance of family. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the memories we hold dear and in the lessons, he taught us through his actions and words.


We will gather on Saturday, October 28th from 11 to 2 pm at The Lodge, 9 Bridge St., Smithboro to reminisce and share stories. As we say goodbye to William "Bill" Dell Steele, we celebrate a life well-lived and remember a man who was a blessing to all who knew him. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, and his memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
