William G. Root

of Smithboro

William G. Root, known affectionately to friends and family as Bill, passed away at his home in Smithboro, on April 8, 2024. Born on October 29, 1941, in Waverly, NY, Bill was the son of the late Carlton and Elizabeth Louise (DePew) Root.

Bill will be remembered by his siblings: James L. Root and his wife Cathi, Robert Root and his wife Beverly, and Roberta L. Bostwick and her husband Don. He was a cherished Uncle to several nieces, nephews, and cousins who also survive. Bill was predeceased by his parents, as well as his sisters, Elizabeth Elaine Barnum and Barbara Mae Robinson, and several nieces and nephews.

For nearly 33 years, Bill dedicated his career to working as a Gandy Dancer for the Conrail Railroad. His commitment to his work was evident to all who worked alongside him, and his contributions helped to keep the wheels of progress turning smoothly.

Bill's interests were as varied as they were engaging. He was an avid gardener, taking pride in having the best garden on Bridge Street. His fascination with history led him to seek out Indian artifacts, each find connecting him to a past that he deeply respected and sought to understand. Bill's creativity shone brightly in his woodworking, where he crafted pieces that were not only functional but also imbued with the love and care of an artist's touch.

A private graveside service for Bill will be held at the convenience of his family. He will be laid to rest next to his parents in the Nichols Cemetery. Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting his guestbook at www.sutfinfuneralchapel.com
