When tomorrow starts without me, try to understand, an angel came and called my name, then took me by the hand…. Just shy of his 90th birthday, Carl L. Hakes of Litchfield, Pa went home to be with his Lord and was reunited with wife Lorraine on Sunday, November 28, 2021. Carl was born on December 1, 1931 in Harpursville, NY a son of the late Elmer and Vera (Warner) Hakes. He attended school in Harpursville and resided there until 1997 when they moved and made Litchfield, Pa their home. In 1951, he married Lorraine T. Neer and together they shared 52 years of marriage until her passing on September 5, 2003. Carl was a retired employee of Howland Brothers in Berkshire and was a talented woodsman. He loved country living and tending to his horses and spending time on his tractor haying. A devoted Catholic Carl was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Waverly and would recite the rosary daily with is daughter Debra. Carl will be greatly missed by his daughter and caregiver Debra Stowell; his grandsons: Jeremiah and his wife Jennifer Stowell; David Stowell; his great grandchildren: Dylan and Jeremy. His sister-in-law Geraldine Neer, several nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Carl was predeceased by his parents; his wife Lorraine; and a sister Christine Wage. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Thursday, December 2nd from 3 - 4 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A celebration of Carl's life will follow at 4 pm. Carl will be laid to rest in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Pa.
