Carl L. Vandervort, Sr.

April 1, 1946 — April 22, 2024

Carl L. Vandervort, Sr., a beacon of joy and generosity, passed away on April 22, 2024, at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, NY. Born on April 1, 1946, in Peckville, PA, Carl's life was a testament to the power of love, service, and laughter. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and was known affectionately as Opa and Grandpa to his cherished grandchildren.

Carl's journey began as one of 12 siblings, and his expansive family was a source of immense pride and happiness. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 53 years, Laura M. (Bender) Vandervort, who was his partner in every sense of the word. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Julie and her husband George Brown, and Carl Jr. and his wife Stacy. Carl's legacy continues through his grandchildren: Justin, Jordan, Devon, Breana, Madison, Mariah, Bailey, Brantley; his step grandchildren Jacob, Aiyana, Duston, and Brandon Brown; many great grandchildren, all who brought boundless joy to his days.

Carl was a brother to Tim Vandervort, Jeff Vandervort (Robin), Sue Carrington, Lorie (Jack) Rogers, and Megan Horton. He was also a valued member of Laura's family, with close bonds with her siblings, Jim and Sherry Bender, and Ed Bender. His life was further enriched by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families, as well as Julie's pup, Chewy, who loved spending time with Carl. He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Esther (Beynon) Vandervort; his stepmother, Rachel Vandervort; his siblings: Joyce, Ed (Mary), Kenny, Norman (Gloria), Roy (Sharon), Karen (Al); brother-in-law Arden Carrington, sister-in-law: Gloria (Chuck) Andres.

A proud graduate of Northeast Bradford Class of 1964, Carl bravely served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, he embarked on a successful career with IBM in Owego and Endicott, retiring from Lockheed Martin as a Purchasing Manager. Carl's work ethic and dedication were matched only by his commitment to his community.

Carl was a man of faith and service, deeply involved in the Warren Center Baptist Church as a Deacon and instrumental in AWANA. He was a founding member of the Warren Center Cruise-In, and his community spirit shone through every action. Carl's "Fleet of Lawnmowers" was more than a hobby; it was his way of spreading kindness, mowing lawns for friends, neighbors, and his church.

Family was the cornerstone of Carl's life. He treasured Friday Family nights at Julie's house, where they shared meals and played cards. His interests spanned from hunting to the joy of building a hut with his daughter, a place he eagerly anticipated spending time in. Carl also eagerly anticipated hunting season, beginning each morning with breakfast with his son before venturing into the hills of Warren Center. He was a true jack of all trades and could fix anything, his handy nature was always at the service of others.

Remembered for his faith-filled heart, handy skills, and generous spirit, Carl had a unique ability to brighten days and lighten hearts. He was a man who never missed an opportunity to share a good joke, leaving a twinkle of mischief in his eye and laughter in his wake. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children... to leave the world a bit better... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Carl embodied this success in every aspect of his life.
