Carl R. Wendela
of Tioga Center, New York
Carl R. Wendela, a cherished husband, devoted father, and adored grandfather, passed away at his home on August 19, 2024, just shy of his 70th birthday. Born on August 23, 1954, in Waverly, NY, Carl's life was marked by his unwavering support for his family and his enduring love of sports.
Carl graduated from Tioga Central High School in 1972, where he first demonstrated his athletic spirit and teamwork as a member of the baseball team. His love for sports remained a constant throughout his life, as he became an avid supporter of all Tioga Sports, cheering enthusiastically from the sidelines. He took particular pride in supporting his daughters, Carla and Sandra, during their Tioga Softball games. Carl's passion extended to his grandchildren—Ella, Clarissa, Nick, and Corey—who always brought a smile to his face and joy to his heart. He was their biggest fan, whether they were playing archery, T-ball, soccer, or volleyball.
Carl's professional life was as varied as it was fulfilling. He began his career at Waverly Agway before moving on to Samina, but it was his position as a valet at the Guthrie Clinic that he considered his dream job. His friendly and kind nature made him a favorite among the visitors and staff alike.
Outside of work, Carl was a dedicated sports fan, loyally following the New York Yankees, the New York Jets, and West Virginia athletics, especially when his daughter attended school there. He also enjoyed participating in men's slow-pitch softball, sharing camaraderie and friendly competition with his teammates.
Carl's personal interests were a reflection of his love for the outdoors and his commitment to excellence. His yard in Tioga Center was a testament to his meticulous care, often said to be the best-manicured lawn in the neighborhood. After the yard work was done, he could be found indulging in one of his simpler pleasures: fishing, where he found solace and contentment in the quiet moments by the water.
Described as loving, friendly, and kind, Carl's presence was a comfort and a beacon of warmth to those who knew him. His ability to connect with people was unparalleled, and his generosity of spirit was felt by everyone he encountered.
Carl is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Julie (Snyder) Wendela; his daughters, Carla and her husband Matt Skinner, and Sandra and her husband Karl Laude; his cherished grandchildren, Ella, Clarissa, Nick, and Corey; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Family was the cornerstone of Carl's world, and he was blessed with a loving circle that included his siblings Alfie and his wife Pat Wendela, Karen Wendela VanNorman, Tracy & Gary Ellison. His sister-in-law Marybeth Wendela. His mother-in-law R. Arlen Snyder; sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Karen and Mark Petzold. Carl's life was further enriched by the bonds he shared with his numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Ward and Jane McConnell, and his siblings Elaine Adams, Nick Wendela, Willie Wendela, and Earl "Gomer" Wendela.
Carl’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of joy, support, and unwavering love. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those he has left behind. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever be a guiding light to his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
