Carol M. Jones, a cherished matriarch and beacon of warmth and dedication in her community, passed away peacefully at her home in Warren Center, PA, on March 7, 2024, at the venerable age of 101. Born on December 24, 1922, in the same small town, Carol's life was a testament to her resilience, love for her family, and unwavering commitment to her community. Carol was predeceased by her beloved husband, Russell L. Jones, whom she married in 1947 at the Warren Center Methodist Church, her parents, Rees C. and Corinne (Abell) Powell, her sisters, Clarice and Olga, who died at birth, and a cherished grandson, Gregory Whipple, who passed away in 2003. Despite the early loss of her mother, Carol was raised with strength and kindness by the family's live-in housekeeper, Alice Brown, who became an integral part of her life. Carol's educational journey was marked by determination and ambition. She attended Warren Center High School for three years before spending her senior year at a boarding home, graduating from Towanda High School. Her quest for knowledge led her to Lowell Business School in Binghamton, where she honed the skills that would serve her throughout her professional and personal life. Her work ethic shone brightly during her time as a legal secretary for Coughlin at the Keenan, Harrison & Coughlin law office, where her proficiency in shorthand and attention to legal details were invaluable. Carol's dedication to her faith and community was evident in her over fifty years of service as treasurer of the Warren Center United Methodist Church (now Hope Community Church), where she also diligently typed and copied the Sunday bulletins and lifted her voice in song as an alto choir member.
A woman of many talents, Carol played the piano not only for church services but also for the residents at Casterline Rest Home, bringing joy through music to those around her. Despite her youthful declaration that she would never be a farmer's wife, Carol embraced life on the farm after marrying Russell, contributing to bookkeeping, feeding calves, and supporting her husband at Holstein Conventions. She served great quantities of meals to feed family, friends and hired help working on the farm.
Carol's interests extended beyond her professional and church obligations. She was a vital part of the WSCS (Woman's Society of Christian Services), took on the role of Warren Twp. School Census taker, and maintained a perfect voting record for 50 years as a member of the Warren Twp. Election Board. Her community involvement also included the Warren Twp. Fireman's Auxiliary, the Community Singers group, and she served as treasurer for both the Northeast Bradford Student Loan Fund and the Northeast Bradford Band Association. Not one for distant travels, Carol surprised herself and others with ventures that included a cruise to Alaska, visits to family in California, and cross-country driving trips with her daughter Janice and family. Her culinary skills, particularly her chocolate chip cookies and frosted cinnamon rolls, were renowned among those who knew her. Carol's family was the centerpiece of her life. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Jacque Jones of Brooklyn Heights, NY; her daughters and son-in-law, Janice and Clyde Whipple of Brackney, PA; Donna Jones of Warren Center; and her five grandchildren and five great grandchildren, who will carry on her legacy of love and generosity Christopher Jones of San Francisco; Adam Jones of Baltimore; Angela Jones of Brooklyn, NY; Derek and Annette Whipple of Oxford, PA; Brandon and Stephanie Whipple of Leesburg, Va. Her five great grandchildren: Meghan, Evan, Esther, Arden and Reed Whipple. Her sisters-in-law, Doris Carmack of Fountain Valley, CA and Ruth Wheaton of Warren Center, PA along with several nieces, nephews, and their families, also remember Carol fondly.
As we remember Carol, we reflect on the words of Helen Keller: "What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Carol's spirit of love, generosity, and faith will forever be a part of the many lives she touched. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Monday, March 11th from 10 – 11 am at the Hope Community Church, 5864 Jackson Valley Rd., Warren Center. A funeral service and celebration of Carol’s life will follow at 11 am. Carol will be laid to rest next to her husband, in the Warren Center Cemetery.
