Charles "Chuck" W. Alger

Charles W. Alger, 73, of Nichols, passed away peacefully at his home, Friday, January 30, 2015. Chuck was born on March 3, 1941 in Nichols a son of the late Howard M. Alger and Iva B. Alger (Simons). He was a graduate of Tioga Central High School class of 1959. Following graduation Chuck enlisted into the US Navy and proudly served his country for five years. Upon an honorable discharge, Chuck went to work for IBM and retired following 35 years of service. On November 19, 1966 he married Sue Carol Deming and together they celebrated nearly 49 years of marriage. He was a member of the Westbrook Masonic Lodge 333 F & AM where he served as Past Master; member of the Waverly Star #9 OES~ serving as Past Patron and also DGL of CST District. Chuck was a life member of the Tioga Center Fire Department and involved in the formation of the Tioga Center Emergency Squad; and a former member of Southside Fire Department. A kind and gentle soul, Chuck enjoyed spending time with his family, watching NASCAR, completing Sudoku, reading a good mystery and jigsaw puzzles. His kind and gentle ways will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Chuck is survived by his wife Sue Alger; his son and daughter-in-law: Brian and Kattina Alger of Brooklyn Center, MN and their children: Nicholas Alger, Kathleen Alger, Avery Ewing, Taylor Ewing, Tara Ewing; his daughter and son-in-law: Heather and James Snyder of Skaneateles, NY and their children: Ashleigh Blauvelt and Matthew Snyder; brothers and sisters-in-law: Philip and Teresa Alger of Waverly; Kenneth and Linda Alger of Mebane, NC; sister and brother-in-law: Kathy and Richard Chilson of Odessa, NY; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Marsha and Rodney Bouchoux, of Ft. Pierce, Fla; Edward and Delisa Deming of Franklin, TN; Donna and Philip Anderson of Madison, WI; Raymond and Denise Deming of Winnabow, NC; many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Thursday, February 5th from 1 to 3 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. Masonic services by the Westbrook Masonic Lodge #333 F & AM will be conducted at the conclusion of calling hours. A memorial service and celebration of his life will follow at 3 pm with Pastor Jon Austin of the Lounsberry United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Nichols Cemetery.
