Cheryl Shumway, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away on December 15, 2023, after a brief battle with cancer. Born on May 31, 1957, in Redwood City, CA, Cheryl's journey through life was marked by her unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched with her generosity and compassion.
Cheryl's life was a testament to the power of caring. Her professional path was a reflection of her innate desire to support and uplift those around her. She devoted her time and energy to helping handicapped children with BOCES in Apalachin and worked at RSS in Owego. Her ten years at the Owego Elementary School were not just a job, but a calling, as she poured her heart into the lives of her students. Cheryl's legacy within these organizations is one of lasting impact, characterized by the countless individuals she helped along the way.
Family was the cornerstone of Cheryl's world. She will be missed by Roger Shumway; her children, Amanda and Rob Stummer, Todd and Jodi Shumway; and her adored grandchildren, Phoenix, Eva, Shane, Sophia, Saige, Olivia, Lucas, Jacob, and great-grandson Lucian. Cheryl's life was also touched by loss, as she was predeceased by her parents, John and Marge (Neilson) Tinnel, her son Bryan Shumway, and brothers John, Russell, and Shayne Tinnel.
Known affectionately as the "event coordinator," Cheryl's ability to bring people together was unmatched. Her home was the heart of family gatherings, where no one ever left hungry, and laughter was the secret ingredient to every meal. She had an uncanny knack for creating joy and a sense of belonging, ensuring that each family event was filled with love and the warmth of her home-cooked meals.
Cheryl's sense of humor was a treasure to all who knew her, a gift that she maintained right up until her final days. Her laughter was a source of comfort and joy, a reminder of the light-heartedness that can often be found even in life's more challenging moments. Her loving, kind, and thoughtful nature was not just felt by her family but emanated through her community and all her interactions.
As we remember Cheryl, we are reminded of the words of Helen Keller: "What we have once enjoyed we can never lose; all that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Cheryl's love, indeed, has become an indelible part of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of kindness and thoughtfulness will continue to inspire and guide us.
Cheryl life was a beautiful tapestry woven with the threads of compassion, humor, and an unwavering commitment to others.
