Chester W. Spencer
of Nichols
Chester W. Spencer, affectionately known to many as Pops and to his friends as Ches, passed away on September 5, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on November 25,1942 in Jamaica, NY, Ches led a life marked by devotion to his family and a passion for the simple joys of life.
Ches was the beloved husband of nearly 54 years to Christine Spencer and a cherished father to Kenton Spencer, Jennifer Negus, and Kristen Beyer. He was predeceased by his daughter Carrie Goodrich, whose memory remained a tender part of his heart. His life was further enriched by the love of his grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister, Laura Hatfield.
After graduating from high school, Ches furthered his education by earning a Bachelor's degree from Long Island University. His intellectual pursuits laid the groundwork for a distinguished career. Ches proudly served his country as a member of the US Coast Guard and was honorably discharged after his dedicated service. He then embarked on a long and successful career as an Engineer for Grumman, and IBM - Lockheed Martin in Owego, from which he retired in 2002 after nearly 30 years of service.
Ches's interests and hobbies were a mirror to his character—thoughtful, creative, and always engaging. An accomplished woodworker and skilled wood carver, he found joy in the art of transforming raw materials into works of beauty and utility. Ches was also known for his green thumb, lovingly tending to his yard and floral gardens, which were a source of pride and pleasure. An avid reader, he favored nonfiction books that allowed him to continually learn and expand his understanding of the world.
Those who knew Ches will fondly recall his friendly demeanor. He had a way of making every encounter feel special, whether it was through his warm and welcoming smile or the friendly wave he offered to neighbors and friends as he enjoyed his daily walks. Ches was always up for a chat and enjoyed visiting with others, sharing stories, and imparting wisdom.
Ches will be remembered as a man who lived his life with purpose and kindness, who valued hard work and the simple pleasures of life, and who loved his family with an unwavering commitment. His legacy is one of love, devotion, and the countless lives he touched with his passionate spirit.
