If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. Clair D. Vergason, 86, of Decker Hill Road, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2009 following a period of declining health. Clair was born on December 22, 1922 in Tyler, Pa a son of Ernest E. and Mary A. (Baker) Vergason. He was a veteran of the US Navy and proudly served his country during WWII. Clair spent his life as an avid dairy farmer and later was employed by Howdy Jones Construction. Following his retirement, Clair enjoyed working on his old truck, spending time traveling in his motor home and attending his great grandchildren's sporting events. Clair was a member of the Lounsberry United Methodist Church, the Nichols Masonic Lodge #333 F & AM. Clair is survived by his love of his life, his wife Mary of nearly 66 years, daughter and son-in-law: Christine and Fred Ackley of Brackney, Pa; brothers Frank J. (Iris) Vergason of Lewistown, MT; Charles (Marilyn) Vergason of Bodine, Pa; a sister Helen Cochran of Billings, MT; close family friends Sue and Chuck Alger of Nichols; grandchildren: Kirk E. (Susan) Vergason and children: Cassandra, Mellissa, and Patrick; Michael D. (Jennifer) Vergason and children: Ryan and Brittany; Brian Alger and Nick and Katie; Heather Alger and children: Ashleigh and Matthew; Jason Ackley and children: Jason Jr., Hunter and Cassandra; several nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Clair was predeceased by his sons Ernest E. Vergason in 1964 and David D. Vergason in 2003; brothers Darwin L. and Albert B. Vergason; sister Gerry Stayer and Donna Piaquiadio. Funeral services and a celebration of Clair's life will be held on Monday, July 20th, 2009 at 2 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols with his pastor, Rev. Jon Austin, officiating. Interment will follow in the Nichols Cemetery. A period of visitation and time of sharing memories will be held on Sunday, July 19th from 6 to 9 pm and on Monday, from 1 pm until the time of the service at 2pm at the funeral chapel. Masonic services will be conducted at 6 pm at the funeral chapel.
