Clayton "Bud" J. Canfield

Clayton Jeremiah Canfield, Jr., 88, of West Warren (RD 2, Rome, PA) passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2010. He was born on October 2, 1922 in Bethlehem, PA a son of the late Clayton J. and Emily (Bowman) Canfield. "Bud" as he was affectionately known as by his family and friends, was a graduate of Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pa and received his accounting degree from the Bethlehem Business College. He proudly served his country during WW II with the US Army as a Staff Sergeant and received three Bronze Stars. Following an honorable discharge from the Army and on November 1, 1947, Clayton married Eleanor Barnes Canfield. Together they were married 54 years, until she passed away on September 9, 2001. Dedicated to his community, Bud was a Charter Member of the Warren Township Fire Company; a member of the Dille Parish United Church of Christ and the West Warren Congregational Church where he served as Moderator, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Treasurer; a member of the Freemansburg American Legion Post #31. In addition he served as Past Board Member of the Warren Township and Northeast Bradford School Board, where he established the Northeast Bradford Student Loan Association, Sage House, Bradford County Children & Youth Services and the Bradford County Child Sexual Abuse Task Force. For many years, Bud served as an accountant for Vestal Lumber Supply, Arthur Huntington Builders, Inc., and the West Warren BP. Clayton will be most remembered for his love and dedication to his family, his keen sense of humor and story telling as well as his service to church, community and country during his younger years. He enjoyed his years and counted his many blessings daily. His passions included baseball, hunting, house painting, card playing, blackberry picking and during his later years sitting on the front porch smoking his cigar. Bud is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: Larry and Rev. Anne Canfield; Brian and Carol Canfield; his grandchildren: Clayton, Jonathan, Catherine, Canfield; Amy (Mike) Johnson, Beth Canfield and Kay Canfield; great grandchildren: Alex and Bailey Johnson; a sister Onnalee (Lynn) Hillegas; sisters-in-law: Ontalee Barnes Wilson and Helen Canfield. Several nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Clayton was predeceased by his parents, his wife Eleanor and a brother Donald. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of Bud's life on Monday, December 6th at 2 pm at the West Warren Congregational Church with Pastor David Pitcher and his daughter-in-law, Rev. Anne Canfield, officiating. A period of visitation and time of sharing memories will be held on Sunday, December 5th from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols.
