Richard C. MacDonald Sr., affectionately known as "Dad" by his loved ones and community, passed away peacefully at his home in Nichols, NY on August 17, 2023. Born on September 29, 1937, in Cayuga, NY, he was 85 years old. A proud veteran of the US Marines, Dad was a beloved figure in his community, known for his generosity, friendly demeanor, and unwavering dedication to his family.


Dick's life was marked by service, both to his country and his community. He served with honor and distinction in the US Marines, a time in his life that he held close to his heart. In 1956, he married the love of his life, Veronica, and they shared a beautiful and enduring love story that lasted 52 years until her passing on November 15, 2011. Dick’s professional journey began in 1966 when he joined IBM in Fishkill, NY. His career with IBM spanned over four decades, during which he worked in Machine Maintenance.


In 1976, Richard and Veronica returned to their roots, moving back to Nichols. Dick and Veronica became a cherished community figures, and were known for their ice cream stand, Dad's Ice Cream. His cheerful service, scooping happiness in the form of ice cream and milkshakes, brought joy to many and made him a beloved figure in Nichols.


A lover of the outdoors, Dad enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting. He owned several race horses, among them his favorites, Lovely Magic and My Buddy Mason. These horses raced all over New York State and locally at Tioga Downs, bringing much excitement and pride to him. Despite his many interests, Dad’s greatest treasure was his family. He was a loving father to his children: Mary MacDonald, Daniel & Anne MacDonald, and Richard "Charlie" MacDonald, Jr. He was also a doting grandfather to Daniel, Sebastian, Veronica, Sarah, Stephanie, Christopher, Sophia, Lauren and Jena; and five great-grandchildren. His sisters Linda Carey, Joan Bulinski, and Mary O'Hare, along with his several nieces, nephews, and a multitude of friends, will remember him for his generous spirit. He was a man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, often refusing anything in return. His morning coffee visits at Gails & Jen's were a cherished routine, a testament to his love for his community.


As the poet Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Dad made everyone he met feel seen, valued, and loved. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the community he served so well.


In the end, Dad was more than just a father, a grandfather, a brother, or a friend. He was a beacon of love, generosity, and friendliness. His life was a testament to the beauty of service, to the joy of community, and to the enduring power of family. His memory will be cherished, his spirit will be missed, and his legacy will continue to inspire.

As we celebrate Dad’s life and the lasting impact he had on those around him, let us remember the love, laughter, and joy he brought to our lives. We will gather on Tuesday, August 22nd from 4 to 8 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols so family and friends can come together to share stories, laughter, and love in remembrance of the man who touched so many hearts. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, August 23 at 11 am at the funeral chapel with Deacon Michael Donovan, officiating.
