Darlene M. (Wheeler) Bortle, affectionately known to those close to her as Dar, passed away on December 9, 2024, after a brave battle with cancer. Born on March 4, 1968, in Sayre, Pennsylvania, Dar's journey through life was marked by her infectious laughter, boundless kindness, and the deep love she shared with those around her. She was surrounded by the warmth and affection of her family in the comfort of her own home.
Dar's life was one of joy and commitment, shared with her husband and best friend, Thomas "Tom" Bortle. Their love story was one for the ages, culminating in their marriage on Tom's birthday, October 8, 2022. Together, they created a life filled with laughter and cherished memories. Dar's legacy lives on through her beloved children, Jennifer (Kevin) Weinman and Carver Henley, and her grandchildren, Alexander "Alex," Aubrianna "Brie," and Savannah, who will continue to feel her love and influence in their lives.
A graduate of Athens High School in 1986, Dar's dedication and work ethic shone brightly in her career as an Assistant Operator at Cargill Meat Plant. Her colleagues there became a second family, holding a special place in her heart. Dar's siblings, Bill (Tammy) Bellows, Ken "Pete" (Ginny) Bellows, Joan "Tiny" (Chuck) Wells, June "Termy" (Joe) Bell, Jan Hall, and Steve Wheeler, along with Tom’s siblings: Bernita Luckman, Debbie (Mike) Toole, Ron (Twe) Bortle, Al (Debbie) Bortle, Donna Bortle (Kenny) Robinson, Alisa (Dan) Paoletti, Danny (Daphine) Bortle, Sharon Morris Bortle; all whom will miss her deeply. Several nieces, nephews among them a special nephew Joey (Tracy) Bell. Her neighbors, whom held a special place in her heart, Kim and Bob Quinn, and dear friend Stephanie Johnston will forever cherish the moments they spent with Dar. Darlene was welcomed into eternal peace by her parents and a brother Jim Wheeler, Jr..
Dar's zest for life was evident in her many passions. She relished the simple pleasures of fishing, camping, and crafting. An adventurer at heart, she loved exploring local waterfalls and could always be counted on to find the nearest ice cream stand during outings. In the kitchen, she worked magic, often creating mouthwatering meals with just three ingredients, each dish infused with love. Blueberry picking at Blueberry Mountain was a favorite pastime, and her quick wit ensured that laughter was a constant companion on these excursions.
Those who knew Dar will remember her as a loving, kind, and funny soul. She had the uncanny ability to light up a room with her humor and to make anyone she met feel like an old friend. As the famous quote by Maya Angelou goes, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Dar made everyone feel loved, and that is her lasting gift to the world.
As we bid farewell to Darlene, we celebrate the extraordinary life she lived and the countless lives she touched. Her laughter, her kindness, and her unwavering spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Dar's story is one of love, laughter, and the enduring power of friendship and family.
