Dave

December 27, 1947 — March 30, 2024

David J. Wilson, affectionately known as Dave by his loved ones, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on December 27, 1947, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Dave's life was characterized by his unwavering kindness, generosity, and the skilled hands of a true mechanic.

Dave is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 17 years, Bonnie (Garinger) Wilson, and his loving family. He was a cherished father to his daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila Merrill, Debbie and Will Glendening, and Christy and Doug Whitenight. He also held a special place in the hearts of Bonnie's children, Kimberly and Corey Wood, Paul and Gabby Bonick, and Tammy Bonick. Dave's legacy continues through his adored grandchildren, Chelsea, Mason, Cale, Evan, Cody, Tyler, Owen, and Dilen, and his great-grandchildren, Declan, Amelia and Liam. He will be fondly remembered by his siblings, Tom and Cami Wilson, Bill and Loeda Wilson, Kathy Wilson, and Virginia Hawk. His faithful canine companion Goldie, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members, will miss his presence dearly. Dave was predeceased by his first wife, Brenda, in 2005, his parents Mason S. and Shirley (Mylott) Wilson; his brother Howard Wilson, and son-in-law David Merrill.

Dave was a proud graduate of Tunkhannock High School and shortly after graduation, his love for his country shone brightly as he enlisted in the United States Marines on May 18, 1967. During his time in the service, he ascended to the rank of Lance Corporal, serving with honor and distinction until his discharge in March 1973.

In his professional life, Dave was a knowledgeable mechanic whose hands were as skilled as his heart was generous. He began his career as an owner-operator truck driver, eventually working as a mechanic, truck driver, and supervisor at Five Star Equipment. His expertise and dedication also shone through in his roles at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, where he served as a diesel mechanic and in flood control. At the time of his passing, he was the esteemed Windham Supervisor, a position he fulfilled with integrity and passion.

Dave's interests were as diverse as they were engaging. He found joy in camping, at Ives Run and Gettysburg which were among his favorite spots. He and Bonnie shared a love for traveling to Florida and the simple pleasure of riding the country roads on their motorcycles. A skilled restorer, Dave breathed new life into a Mustang and raced it at Skyview, earning him recognition and awards. His John Deere tractor and daily visits on his gator to visit Chester were among his treasured routines. Above all, Dave found comfort in the melodies of Bonnie playing "The Old Rugged Cross" on the organ, a hymn that resonated with his soul.

Described by those who knew him best as handy, generous, and kind, Dave's ability to fix anything was matched only by his willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need. His warm smile and gentle nature were a beacon of light in the lives of many.

In remembering Dave, we are reminded of the words of Albert Einstein, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile." Dave's life was a testament to this belief, as he lived not just for himself, but for his family, friends, and community.

As we bid farewell to Dave, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey marked by love, service, and the joy of shared experiences. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, and his spirit will forever be a part of the fabric of our lives.
