Dennis F. Smith
of Waverly
Dennis Francis Smith, 78, affectionately known as Denny, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2023, at the Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, NY following a brief period of declining health. Born on May 8, 1945, in Waverly, NY, Denny lived a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. He is remembered as a friendly, thoughtful, and gentle soul who brought joy to everyone he met.
Denny was a proud graduate of Spencer VanEtten High School, Class of 1965. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and served his country with honor from 1965 to 1967. After his time in the military, Denny returned to his roots in Halsey Valley and worked on the Frisbee Farm, where he developed a lifelong love for farming. This passion led him to work for the Engelbert Family Farm in Nichols, NY. Denny also spent ten years working at NCR in Ithaca, NY, before joining the custodial staff at Cornell University, where he worked until his retirement in 2011.
Denny's interests were as diverse as his work history. He closely followed the NY Yankees and the NY Giant teams' schedules, and his mood could often be gauged by their wins and losses. In addition to his love of sports, Denny enjoyed hunting and fishing, activities that allowed him to appreciate the beauty of nature and the great outdoors. He also enjoyed the fellowship with his fellow comrades and was a former member of the Candor American Legion.
Denny is survived by his siblings, Delbert (Carol) Smith of Lancing, NY, Daniel (Mary) Smith of Spencer, NY, Deryl (Michelle) Smith of Spencer, and Yvonne Smith of Texas. He leaves behind his daughter, Tammy Sue Golden, several grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and their families also survive. Denny was predeceased by his parents, Meade and Wilma M. (Deming) Smith, and his sisters, Dolores Covey and Connie Lincoln.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "It is not the length of life, but the depth," and Denny's life was certainly rich in depth. Denny's passing leaves a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. His friendly nature, thoughtfulness, and gentle spirit will be dearly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. As we remember and celebrate Denny's life, let us be inspired by his example and strive to be useful, honorable, and compassionate in our own lives.
Denny's legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate enough to know him, and he will be sorely missed by all. His memory will serve as a reminder to live life to the fullest and to always treat others with kindness and respect.
Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Friday, June 2nd at 11 am at the Nichols Cemetery.
