Donald E. Roof
of Fredericksburg, VA
Donald E. Roof, known affectionately to many as Don, passed away on August 24, 2024, in Binghamton, NY, at the age of 77. Born on March 28, 1947, in Harrisburg, PA, Don grew into a loving, kind, and intelligent man who left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Don's life was rich with the love of family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Patricia “Pat” M. (Neville) Roof, whom he married on December 23, 1977. Together, they built a life filled with joy, laughter, and enduring memories. He was a proud father to his children: Theresa (Michael) DeNapoli, Bryan D. (Katie) Roof, James Manchester, and Elizabeth (Tom) Manchester. Don was also blessed with grandchildren—Katherine, Jackson, Sydney, Maxwell, Alexander, Catherine, and Dashel—who were the apple of his eye. His siblings, Suzanne Stambaugh, Sandra (Ed) Sasa, Janet Haggard; and Linda Main, along with brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Timothy (Ruth) Neville, Pam Neville, Debra Neville, and Edward Neville, will hold dear the memories they shared. Don's life was also enriched by his relationships with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families who survive him. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Katherine (Wolfe) Roof, his brother James, and brothers-in-law Roy Stambaugh, Vincent Neville, and Daniel Neville.
Don was a proud graduate of Central Dauphin East High School. He continued his education to graduate Cum Laude with an Associate's Degree in Computer Science. His academic achievements paved the way for a distinguished career in the US Air Force, where he served his country with honor. Don’s intelligence and diligence led him to a successful career as a Computer Programmer for the Department of Defense, where he worked in California and Virginia. His colleagues knew him as a man who could always be relied upon to solve complex problems with patience and precision.
Don cherished the time he spent with his family, whether it was during the summers at his second home at Highland Lake in Warren Center, PA, or on visits to his family in North Carolina, Florida, and Virginia. He was a man who understood the value of simple pleasures, such as fishing with his grandchildren, teaching them to drive before they were of age, or enjoying a good nap. Don's willingness to help others in need was evident to all, and he was always the first to offer a hand.
His commitment to his community was demonstrated through his involvement with the Warren Twp Annual Fireman's Field Days, where he enjoyed helping and connecting with his neighbors. Don was a man who found happiness in the everyday, whether puttering around the house or sharing a meal with loved ones.
As Albert Einstein once said, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile." Don truly embodied this sentiment, living a life full of purpose and love for others. His legacy is one of compassion, generosity, and wisdom, traits that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Don will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of his company. His life was a testament to the enduring power of love and the importance of family. We will gather on Thursday, August 29th from 11 – 1 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols for a period of visitation. A funeral service will follow at 1 pm. Don will be laid to rest in the St. Luke’s Cemetery. Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting his guest book at www.sutfinfuneralchapel.com In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be directed to the Warren Twp.
