Doris Helen (Hawthorne) Hiley "A life well lived." Doris Helen (Hawthorne) Hiley, 92, of the Schoolhouse Apartments in Nichols, NY, and formerly from Athens, PA, passed away at Elderwood in Waverly, NY, on October 4, 2017, following a brief illness. Born August 17, 1925 in Carthage, NY, she was the daughter of Leon and Claribel (Porter) Hawthorne. Doris was a 1943 graduate of Waverly High School. She married Joseph C. Hiley on November 26, 1947, and together they ran the family dairy farms in Athens, PA. Never one to sit idle, Doris was a skilled seamstress, knitter and crafter, making beautiful quilts, sweaters, mittens, hats and Christmas ornaments for her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren and friends. Giving to and sharing with others brought her immense joy. Cooking and baking were also her passion and she found great joy in cooking and baking to share with family and friends, which she continued to do so until shortly before her death. She also enjoyed canning food from the garden and always had a pantry full of home-canned vegetables and jellies. What she enjoyed most of all was spending time with her family and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Doris was a life-long NY Yankees fan, and everyone is encouraged to wear their NY Yankees attire to her services in her honor. In addition to her parents, preceding her in death were her husband, Joseph C. Hiley, son, Gary R. Wood, siblings, Franklin Hawthorne, Madeline Arnold, Janice Gleockner, and Donald Hawthorne. Surviving are her children, Edwin Hiley and Rose Garrity, Joseph and MaryLou Hiley of Athens, PA, Lisa and Kevin Engelbert of Nichols, NY, and Phillip and Paula Wood of O'Fallon, IL; Special Daughter-in-Laws, Debby Eltringham and Wanda Hibbard Maxwell; Grandchildren, Benjamin Hiley, Scott Hiley, Lucas Hiley, Elise Hiley, Sarabeth Hiley, Kristopher Engelbert, Joseph Engelbert, John Engelbert, Phillip Wood, Robyn (Wood) Rosson, Jesse Wood, Amy (Wood) Albright, and Jason Wood; Great-Grandchildren, Maggie Engelbert, Natalie Engelbert, Asher Engelbert, Abigail Engelbert, Emily Engelbert, Callie Engelbert, Madalyn Hiley, Gretchen Hiley, Joseph Hiley, Brayden Hiley, Micah Hiley, Eve Hiley, Camden Hiley, Caleb Smith, Colson VanHorn, Max Hoffmann, Lucas Wood, Lillian Wood, Parker Rosson, Elizabeth Albright and Zack Albright; Brother, Gordon Hawthorne, and many special nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by special friends, Mary Smith, Nancy Russell, Nancy Rumpff, MaryJane Chapman, Jean Wagner and many others. Family and Friends may call at Sutfin Funeral Home, 273 S. Main Street, Nichols, NY on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, from 4 - 7 p.m. A celebration of Doris' amazing life will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor George Budine of the Nichols Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Smithboro Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
