No farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye, you were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why…..Douglas R. Horton, 65, a life long resident of Nichols, NY passed away suddenly on Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Corning Community Hospital. Doug as he was known by his family and friends was born on May 21, 1945 in Nichols a son of the late Clifford and Eva (Doane) Horton. He was a graduate of Tioga Central High School Class of 1963. Doug was a life member of the Nichols Fire Department where he served as Chief; a former member of the Nichols Cemetery Board of Directors; served as a Village Trustee and was a former Mayor of Nichols. In addition, he was a member of the Nichols American Legion. Doug enjoyed golfing, dancing, tinkering on lawn equipment and spending time with those he loved. Doug is survived by his children, his son Michael Horton and his wife Lisa; a daughter Shelly and her husband Randall Simmons; his grandchildren: Peter and Emma Simmons; step grandchildren: Kyle, Danielle, Eric and Sierra; step great grandchildren: Justin, Gage and Kyle, Jr. Brothers: Dick Horton and Gordon (Irene) Horton; sister Joan (Frank) Mosher; his former wife and mother of his children, Vivian Horton, a special loving friend Marlene Kemp; several nieces, nephews cousins and their families also survive. Doug was predeceased by his parents and a brother Norman. A period of visitation and time of sharing memories will be held on Thursday, May 19th from 3 to 6 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. Funeral services will follow at 6 pm.
