Edith M. Marshall

On September 12, 2012, Edith M. Marshall died at the Bradford County Manor in Burlington, PA, where she spent her last years in declining health. Born Oct. 25, 1921 in Alba, PA, she was one of 7 daughters of George Bruce and Isabel Marion (Hartman) Foss. She married Milon E. Marshall of Windham, PA, October 29, 1944. Their marriage lasted almost 60 years. She is survived by her children: Joan (Frederick) Nichols and James Marshall, both of Windham, PA; her grandchildren Ann Lynette (Chris) Nickels of Nichols, NY; Scott (Yong Suk [Suzy]) Nichols of Windham, PA; and Teresa Marshall of Rose Hill, NC; her great grandchildren Bethany Hartwell, Ethan Nickels, Eryn Nichols, Jace Nichols, Sara Nichols, and Ryan Marshall (Danielle); and a great-great grandson Eli Marshall. She is survived by one sister, Nancy Jenney of Brick, NJ, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Milon in 2004; her sisters and brothers in law, Winifred (Claude) Eiffert, Helen (Paul) Brooks, Lorena (Gerald) McKinney, Margaret (Duward) Clark, Robert E. Jenney and Florence Foss; her brother in law and sister in law, Clark and Helen Hall; and nieces and nephews, Phyllis Jennings, Paula Clark, Linda Gardner, Edward Eiffert, Leon McKinney and Robert G. Jenney. Edith graduated from Troy, Pennsylvania High School in 1939. She was a very good student and was advanced a grade in her elementary years in the Alba, PA school. In her teens, Edith liked to write poetry. Determined to complete her high school years, she had to work for her board in Troy in order to attend the high school there. And surprisingly in her years at the Manor, she found a fellow classmate in the roommate she enjoyed for those years, Mary Fleming Harkness. Prior to her marriage, Edith worked at the Ingersoll Rand in Athens Pa. After her marriage, she became a homemaker and mother who loved surrounding her home with flower gardens. She always had a vegetable garden and she canned and froze the bounty from her garden and made jams and jellies. She was active in the Home Bureau in Nichols, NY, United Presbyterian Women, and was a member of the Presbyterian church of Nichols. She served on the governing boards at the Presbyterian Church for many years. In late years, she was the oldest surviving member of the church. She will be missed very much by her family, friends and church family. The family wishes to thank the employees of the Bradford County Manor, Dr. Vance Good and the Guthrie Hospice for their loving care and kindness. We also thank Mary Harkness for her watchful eye over Edith. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation and time of sharing memories on Saturday, September 15, 2012 from 1 to 2 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel. Funeral services and a time of remembering Edith will follow at 2pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols with Pastor James Donahoo, officiating. Interment and prayers of committal will follow in the Nichols Cemetery.
