Ellen S. Story
of Barton
Ellen S. Story, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2024, at the age of 91 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre following a brief illness. Born on January 20, 1933, in Jermyn, PA, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Florence Allen.
Ellen was a graduate of the old Owego High School, and in her younger years, she worked at EJ Shoe Factory and the Gold Medal Ladder Factory in Newark Valley. However, her true calling was found in the heart of her home. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, Ellen found her greatest joy and fulfillment. She was married to Russell W. Story, for 57 years until his passing on April 16, 2022. Together, they built a family legacy that will forever be cherished.
Ellen was the proud matriarch of a large and loving family. She leaves behind her sons and daughters-in-law: Russell "Rusty" E. and Krista Story, Mitch and Cindy Nichols, Douglas M. Nichols and Crystal DeMarco-Nichols; her daughter-in-law Pat Nichols; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ruth and Samuel Orme. Her special grandchildren Cassandra (Nate), Matthew, Kaiden (Kaylea), Melissa, Gregory (Nicole), Crystal, Cathy (Shawn), Laurie, Autumn (Jerod), Miranda (Dakota), Justin (Michelle), and her great-grandchildren Aryanna, Gabriel, Jaxson, Kendrick, Benjamin, Brayden, Elijah, Taytum, Brayden, Phoebe, Kasen, McKenna, Austin, Braden, Jack, Alex, Tanner, Mathew, Caitlyn, Dylan, Cristian, Ian, Weston, along with her great-great-grandchildren Oakley, Gianna, Miles, Bentley, and two more on the way, will hold her memory in their hearts. Ellen's life was also blessed with several nieces, nephews, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Russell W. Story, her son Gregory Nichols, her parents Charles and Florence (Harvey) Allen, her siblings Ken Allen, Roy Allen, Florence Tennant, and a great-grandson Cameron.
Ellen's interests were as varied as they were passionate. She was an avid gardener, taking pride in her ability to cultivate the earth and preserve its fruits and vegetables through canning. A wonderful cook, her chili sauce was legendary among family and friends. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, like riding her bicycle and ice skating — a skill she honed to the point of being able to skate backward with ease. Music was another of Ellen's loves; she played both the accordion and organ, bringing melodies into the lives of those around her.
A faithful servant, Ellen was a long-time, over 60-year member of the Owego Nazarene Church. Her voice graced the choir, and she imparted wisdom and faith as a Sunday school teacher. Her love for her church and community was evident in all she did.
Ellen was described by those who knew her best as loving, kind, and faith-filled. Her presence was a comfort, her guidance a blessing, and her devotion to her family a testament to her character. As Helen Keller once said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." Ellen's life was a reflection of this belief, as the love she shared was indeed the most beautiful thing of all.
