Elvira "Vi" B. Nickels

A mother holds her children's hands for a short time, but holds their hearts forever……Elvira "Vi" Nickels, 91, of Owego, passed away December 24, 2014 following a brief illness. A daughter of the late John and Ethel (Marsh) Shumway, she was born on August 6, 1923 in Owego. After high school in Owego, she graduated from Delhi College and joined IBM Endicott working in the Education Division. In 1943, she left IBM to marry the love of her life, George Nickels, and together they celebrated 66 years of marriage until his passing on August 3rd, 2009. They purchased the dairy farm from George's parents and continued to operate it for over 45 years. Vi enjoyed gardening, canning vegetables, watching the bluebirds, and sharing visits and coffee with friends. Special thanks to Mert and Carol Hoke, and John and Rose Berry for their dedication and weekly visits. Vi was an avid reader and read right up to a week before her passing. She greatly enjoyed reading on her Kindle. Vi will be greatly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jerry Adams of Newark Valley; her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Diane Nickels of Owego; her grandchildren: Andrea Adams, Beth (David) Peck, Sarah Zumwalt, Jennifer (Tony) Nickels-Simielo and Christopher (Lynette) Nickels; nine great grandchildren; her sisters-in-law: Nancy Nickels, Nora Hyde, Hilda (Dean) Wakefield; many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Vi was predeceased by her parents, her husband George, her sisters Myra, Alice, Margaret and a brother John. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Saturday, January 3rd 2015 from 10 - 12 at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A memorial service and celebration of Vi's life will follow at 12 noon with her grandson-in-law David Peck officiating.
