J. Frederick "Fred" Wheaton, aged 85, of Warren Center, PA, passed away peacefully at his home on February 25, 2024. Born at home on March 29, 1938, in the same tight-knit community he would cherish all his life, Fred was a beacon of love and service, deeply interwoven into the fabric of his beloved town.
Fred was the loving husband of Elizabeth "Betty" Wheaton, with whom he shared nearly 59 years of marriage since their wedding day on May 29, 1965. Together, they raised a family that was the center of his world. He is survived by his daughters, Renee (Rich) Herb and Kimberly Wheaton; his grandchildren, McKenna Wheaton, William Herb, Toni Herb, Tanner Herb, Micah Wheaton, and Alexis Wheaton, who were his pride and joy. Fred also leaves behind his sister, Kathleen Dickinson; sisters-in-law, Ruth Wheaton and Marylea Wheaton; Betty's siblings: Barbara and Tom Judge; Julia and Paul Moriarty; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends who will miss his generous spirit. He is predeceased by his parents, Glenn Franklin and Gene Alice (Runyon) Wheaton; his brothers, Walter "Bud" Wheaton and Douglas Wheaton; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Virginia and Fred Post.
A proud graduate of Northeast Bradford High School Class of 1956, Fred briefly attended Penn State University before his love for country living drew him back home. In 1966, he began a longstanding career with Howdy Jones Construction, where he worked until 1990. Fred's dedication to his community led him to serve as Road Forman for Warren Township for 25 years and as Warren Township Supervisor for 30 years, retiring in 2022. His commitment to public service was unwavering and deeply respected.
Fred's heart was ever-present in Warren Center. He was a founding member and instrumental in establishing the Annual Cruise In, an event that brought joy and camaraderie to the community. Alongside his brother Doug, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of being a "gentleman" farmer. A man of profound faith, Fred's most important and first love was for God and the reciprocal love he felt from his Creator. His spiritual life was nourished by his faithful attendance at the Warren Center Baptist Church, having formerly attended the Warren Center United Methodist Church, where he served in various capacities including greeter and bell ringer. Fred's benevolence extended to his role as a member of the Warren Twp. Vol Fire Dept. and as caretaker for the Warren Center Cemetery, ensuring that the history and memories of the community were honored and preserved.
Those who knew Fred would describe him as loving, selfless, and friendly. His presence was a comfort to those around him, and his selfless acts were done with a warm smile that could light up any room. Fred's concern for his family was paramount, and his actions reflected his deep care for each of them. His legacy is one of kindness, community service, and an unwavering dedication to his loved ones.
Fred's life was a testament to the power of community and the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. His memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his influence will be felt for generations to come in Warren Center. Fred lived a life full of meaning, purpose, and joy, and while he will be greatly missed, his spirit will remain a guiding light for his family and community.
