Frederick William Lengemann, 88, of Rome, PA, Professor Physiology Emeritus/Animal Physiology, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2013. He was born on April 8, 1925, a son of the late Peter and Dorathea Johanna (Wolter) Lengemann. On December 23, 1950, he married Joan Doremus. During WWII, he served as an aviation radioman in the US Navy-Pacific Theater He received his BS, With Distinction, from Cornell University in 1950, his Masters in Nutritional Science in 1951, and his PhD from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) in 1954. He began his career as a research associate at the University of Tennessee - Atomic Energy Commission for the Agricultural Research Program in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He was hired as an Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department at the University of Tennessee Medical School - Memphis from 1955-1959. He served the majority of his career, from 1959-1988, as a Professor in the Department of Physiology at Cornell University. In 1988, he received his Physiology Emeritus. In addition, he was a consultant for the Food and Agriculture Department, Vienna, Austria from 1966-1967 and 1976-1977, was an IAEA expert at U. Nacional Agraria, Peru, 1978, and served as lecturer and director of training courses for international participants. He owned and operated the Red Barn Farm, his Christmas tree farm, in Freeville, NY, for 25 years. Fred was a former member of the Town of Dryden Planning Board (1963-1968); served as treasurer of the Rome Presbyterian Church; was a member of the New York State Christmas Tree Growers Association, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi; and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. During his retirement, Fred enjoyed spending time in his garden, walking his dog "Topher", bird watching, traveling, reading, and having daily outings with his beloved wife of nearly 63 years. His greatest pleasure was being surrounded by his family. Fred was a wonderful husband, special father, and loving grandfather who will be greatly missed by his wife, Joan; his son and daughter-in-law: Frederick "Rick" William, Jr. and Doreen Lengemann of Rome, Pa; David Munson Lengemann of MI; his special grandchildren: Danielle and Michael Robinson; Frederick "Derick" William Lengemann, III; a loving and caring sister-in-law, Louise D. Lauer of Greenville, PA, and a sister, Helen Groves of DeLancy, NY. He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Guinta in December 2010. Abiding with Fred's wishes, there will be no services. At a later date, and at the convenience of the family, there will be a private memorial service held, with the Rev. Dr. Karen Ballard officiating.
