George M. Rice, Jr., a cherished husband to his wife Phoebe, passed away suddenly due to a heart attack on March 28, 2024, at the age of 76, at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa.
George was born on December 28, 1947, in Sayre and spent his entire life in Nichols, Waverly and the Lockwood communities he loved, forming lifelong friendships and touching the lives of many. He displayed his patriotic spirit by serving his country for 8 years in the US Army, and was stationed in Germany.
George, was a devoted husband to his wife, Phoebe for nearly four decades. His memory will also be cherished by their children Michael Allen, Melinda Sue, Elaine, Barbie, Charlie, Donald, Jay, Sheila, and Debbie. His legacy further blossomed with the joy of several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren. George's passing leaves a void in the hearts of his two surviving brothers and three sisters, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and their families, who all remember him fondly.
Professionally, George dedicated 35 years to Charm Pools in Waverly as a skilled pool installer. His work, characterized by precision and reliability, earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and clients alike.
George's passion for the outdoors was evident to all who knew him. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and trapper, finding peace and contentment in the natural world. His adventures often included riding his 4-wheeler through the scenic trails around the woods at his home, a pastime that brought him considerable joy. Beyond his outdoor pursuits, George was incredibly knowledgeable in construction. His hands skillfully created porches, decks, and pavilions that stand as a testament to his craftsmanship and creativity.
Those who knew George would describe him as handy, creative, and friendly. He was the kind of person who could fix almost anything, a trait that often made him the go-to person in his family. His creative problem-solving abilities were matched only by his willingness to lend a hand or share a warm smile with anyone in need.
We will gather on Tuesday, April 2nd for a period of calling hours from 10 – 11 am at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A funeral service will follow at 11 am at the funeral home.
