Softly in the morning, you heard a gentle call, you took the hand God offered you and quietly left us all…..H. LaVern Shores, 91, of Nichols went home to be with his Lord on Sunday morning, March 4, 2018. Vern as he was affectionally known by his family and friends was born on January 8, 1927 in Towanda, Pa the second son of Walter and Louise (Robinson) Shores. He attended grade school at the two room school in Black, Pa and graduated from Towanda High School in 1944. Following graduation Vern became a self-employed painter in the area. In 1960, he went to IBM and retired in 1991 following thirty-one years of service. Vern proudly served his country as a Sergeant with the US Army. He was a member in good standing of the Chemung Valley-Waverly Masonic Lodge #350 F. a member in good standing of the Lodge Council Chapter Consistory Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Binghamton. Vern enjoyed playing golf, visiting with friends, dinner out with his Helen and riding his antique tractor in the Nichols Old Home Day parades. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 22 years, Helen Mills Shores; step daughter: Judy Vergason who faithfully cared for him for the past several years; his step son Tim Mills; half-brother David (Theresa) Shores; sisters-in-law: Margarie Shores and Glenda Shores; several nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Vern was predeceased by his wives, Geraldine Miller Shores, Mary Davis Shores; brothers Llewellyn Shores, Edward Shores; Norman Shores and sister Frances Shores Lewis. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Thursday, March 8th from 11 to 1 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A funeral service and celebration of Vern's life will follow at 1pm with Masonic Services being conducted at the start of his service.
