When someone you love becomes a memory….the memory becomes a treasure. Our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother Harriette E. Lant, 89, of W. River Rd., Nichols, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, January 8, 2008 following a period of declining health. Harriette was born on November 25, 1918 in Mahopac Falls, NY a daughter of the late George Lewis and Rena May (Patch) Tompkins. She attended school in Berkshire and was a graduate of Berkshire High School Class of 1935. On June 29, 1935 in Montrose, PA she married Harry Lant and together they made Berkshire their home where they owned and operated a farm for twenty years. In addition, she found time to share her knowledge with others by becoming a 4-H leader for the "Berkshire Blue Ribbon Club" and she also served as Vice President of the Parent Teachers Association at the Edward R. Eastman School. In 1966, Harriette and Harry moved to Nichols. She was employed at the Nichols Elementary School as a cook until her retirement in 1985. Following her retirement she continued to serve others and was employed by the Ames Department store in Sayre. Harriette enjoyed reading, spending time with her Dachshound "Mitsy" and visiting with friends and family. She is survived by her daughters: Beverly Monk of Lisle, NY; Jacqueline Jewett of Berkshire, NY; JoAnn Foster of Nichols, NY; Betty and Larry Doolittle of Whitney Point, NY; her sons: Paul and Eileen Lant of Cortland, NY; and Dale Lant of California; a brother John B. (Beth) Tompkins of California; sisters Luella James of Vestal and Berma Shaver of Apalachin; grandchildren: Kelly, Rose, Deborah, Patricia, Laurie, Cheryl, Melody, Gordon, Wesley, Ginger, Tina, Tiffany and Jess; seventeen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. Harriette was predeceased by her husband Harry on April 3, 1970; sister Ida May; brothers Norman Lewis "Pete" Tompkins, Wesley Tompkins; sons-in-law: Gordon Foster, John Jewett, Craig Munk; grandchildren: Mark Monk, Craig Munk, Jr, Wesley Monk and Raymond Doolittle. Abiding with Harriette's wishes there will be no funeral services. A private family interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Evergreen Cemetery, Berkshire.
