A life well lived is a precious gift of hope and strength and grace from someone who has made our world a brighter, better place….our hearts were saddened on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 with the sudden passing of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother Helaine I. McCoy, 92 of Nichols. Helaine was born on September 8, 1916 in Chazy, NY a daughter of Wilmer and Elizabeth (Wells) Matott. She was a graduate of the Plattsburg High School where she was Valedictorian of her class. On January 19, 1937 she married Glenn R. McCoy. Helaine was a member of the Nichols United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, participated in the church choir, the Kum Join Us Class, the United Methodist Women and helped to start the first Brownie Troop in Nichols. Helaine was a member of the Nichols Rebekah Lodge and the Order of Eastern Star in Nichols. She was a volunteer for the Community Care Network of Nichols and at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Helaine enjoyed playing computer games and being able to send e-mails to her grandchildren. In addition, she also was a FCC Ham Radio operator using the name KA2ISF. She enjoyed knitting although her greatest enjoyment was being surrounded by her family. Helaine is survived by her children: Glenn and Dawn McCoy; Sandy and Dave Cleveland and Teri and Harvey Hennip; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; her sister-in-law Vivian McCoy and brother in law and sister in law Bruce and Thelma McCoy; several nieces, nephews and their families also survive along with her dog Princess. Helaine was predeceased by her husband Glenn R. McCoy on March 18, 2000 and eight siblings. Funeral services and a celebration of Helaine's life will be held on Saturday, December 20th at 2 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 South Main St., Nichols with her Pastor Dan Martin, officiating. A period of visitation and sharing memories will be held on Saturday from 12 noon until the time of the service.
