Iva Jean Burgess of Fillmore, New York

Iva Jean Burgess, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 13, 2025, at her home in Fillmore, NY. Born on June 24, 1944, in Sayre, Pa, to Louis and Irene (Steele) Sutton, Iva's life was a tapestry of warmth, generosity, and devotion to her family.

Iva's life was a tapestry woven with devotion to her family and her faith. She was the cherished wife of Gerald L. Burgess Sr., with whom she shared nearly 62 years of unwavering love and companionship. Together, they raised a family that included her children: Donnie Sutton, Gerald Jr. (Phyllis) Burgess, Sheila (Pat) Bryan, Harvey Burgess, and Beverly Kio (Elmer Stevens). Her love and legacy continue to live on through her brother Harry Sutton, her adoring grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and the extended family of her husband Jerry. She was greeted in heaven by her parents, her sister Judy Adams, and her brother Billy Sutton, who predeceased her.

Iva lived her faith through her actions, touching the lives of others with her gentle spirit and enduring compassion. Her life was a reflection of the virtues she held dear, and her legacy is one of unconditional love and selfless service. Iva found delight in life's simple pleasures. Her home was always filled with the aroma of her cooking and baking. She was the heart of Sunday dinners, where family gathered around the table to enjoy her famous mac and cheese, no-bake cookies, and her famous bread. Her culinary skills were surpassed only by her love for those she fed, making each meal a cherished memory.  Her creative hands were rarely still, as she found solace and joy in crocheting, knitting, and sewing. Each stitch was a testament to her patience and attention to detail, crafting warmth and beauty for those she loved. Iva's passion for collecting Scooby Doo memorabilia and elephants reflected her whimsical spirit and love for the unique and endearing.

Iva and Jerry shared many happy hours over a friendly game of rummy, their laughter and companionship a testament to their enduring love and friendship. Their dog, Walker, was a treasured companion, and he will miss the cuddles and treats that were a constant in Iva's nurturing presence. Described by those who knew her as loving, kind, and generous, Iva's influence extended beyond her immediate circle. Her warm smile and open heart made her a beloved figure in her community, her generosity a quiet force for good in the lives of many.

Iva's departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, yet her spirit remains a guiding light. Her life was a lesson in love, her memory a comfort to those she leaves behind. We will gather on  Monday, October 20th, a date that marks her and Jerry's 62nd wedding anniversary—a fitting tribute to a lifetime of love. It will be a day to honor a woman whose presence was a gift to us all. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation from 11 – 1 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A celebration of her life will follow at 1 pm with Pastor Russell LaBarr, officiating. It will be a day to honor a woman whose presence was a gift to us all.
