Jean

April 30, 1929 — June 3, 2024

Frances Jean Morris, known affectionately as Jean to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2024, at the age of 95 at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. Born on April 30, 1929, in Athens, Pa, Jean's life was a testament to her enduring spirit and her capacity for love and kindness.

Jean's journey began as a bright-eyed child in Lounsberry and then Nichols, where she nurtured her love for learning. Despite leaving school at a young age, Jean's insatiable thirst for knowledge led her to earn six different diplomas, specializing in Social Work and Law. Her academic achievements were a source of great pride and set a powerful example for her family.

Jean's professional life was dedicated to the nurturing and care of others. As a loving mother and homemaker, she provided a warm and welcoming environment for not only her own children but also foster children through Broome County Social Services. Jean's commitment to family was unwavering, and she took great joy in raising three of her granddaughters, guiding them with the same love and wisdom she shared with all her children.

Surviving Jean are her six children: Charles E. Morris, Marie Lee, Irene (Stanley) Byrd, Robert L. (Renee) Morris, Michael Morris, and Charles R. Morris. Her legacy continues through her fourteen grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished deeply. Jean also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and her dear friends Tom and Gloria Jones, who will miss her bright presence. Jean was welcomed into heaven by her parents Lewis Vernon and Hazel (Green) English; her husband Robert Morris; and siblings: Robert E. English, Marjorie Ann English, Amy May English and Max English.

Jean's interests were as rich and varied as the tapestry of her life. She found joy in the simple pleasures of crocheting and embroidering, creating beautiful pieces that were expressions of her love. Music was a source of comfort for Jean, and she enjoyed the timeless songs of country legends like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Despite losing her sight, Jean's vision for a life full of love and connection never waned. She navigated her world with grace and determination, embodying the essence of resilience.

Those who knew Jean would describe her as loving, kind, and friendly—qualities that she embodied effortlessly. Her warm smile and open heart will be greatly missed by so many. As we remember Jean, we are reminded of the words of Helen Keller: "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart." Jean lived by this creed, feeling the beauty of the world with her heart and sharing it generously with those around her.

Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of her life on Friday, June 7th at 3 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. Jean will be laid to rest privately at the Vestal Hills Memorial Park.
