Jeanne M. Shipman

of Waverly, NY

Jeanne M. Shipman, a beacon of love and friendship, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024, at the Elderwood at Tioga Nursing Facility in Waverly, NY. Born on July 29, 1940, in the quaint area of Prospect Hill in Barton, NY, Jeanne's life was a testament to the power of kindness and the joy of being surrounded by family. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend whose warmth and generosity touched the lives of all who knew her.

Jeanne's journey began as the daughter of Phillip and Marjorie (Golden) Petty, who predeceased her. She grew up in a world that valued community and hard work, values that she carried with her throughout her life. Jeanne attended school at Tioga Central where memories and friendships were formed. Her work ethic was evident in her diverse careers; she worked diligently at Moreton Cleaners, Endicott Johnson Shoe Factory, and IBM. Her smile and willing to help others shone brightly during her time as a housekeeper at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Terrence "Tiny" Shipman, and her dear companion, Fred Schweiger. She also bid farewell to her siblings Gertrude Vergason, William "Bill" Petty, and Hattie Chapman before her own passing.

Family was the cornerstone of Jeanne's world. She was a loving mother and mother-in-law to Terry and Terri Shipman, and a doting grandmother to Tyler and Carolyn Shipman, and Thea Chapman. Her joy multiplied with the arrival of her great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Brody, Allyson, Caroline, and Frankie, and she was blessed to meet her great-great-grandchildren, Braxton and Oliver. Jeanne's brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Cindy Petty, along with her special friends Rosemary Forest and Barb Cooper, were integral parts of her life, as were her many nieces, nephews, and their families. Her heart was large enough to also embrace Fred Schweiger’s children and grandchildren, who became part of her extended family.

Jeanne's life was characterized by her involvement in her community. She was an active member of the Waverly Senior Citizens, North Barton Grange #45, and she found joy in the companionship of her friends at monthly meetings with the Red Hatters. Her love for life was evident in her hobbies; she relished the time spent completing puzzles, playing games with her grandchildren, tending to her flower garden, and welcoming the visit of cardinals—a symbol of hope and joy.

We will gather on Monday, September 16th at 1 pm at the Barton Center Cemetery to lay Jeanne to rest. Please dress casual. Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting her guestbook at www.sutfinfuneralchapel.com Memorial contributions may be directed to the North Barton Grange #45, PO Box 679, Waverly, NY 14892 in loving memory of Jeanne M. Shipman. As we bid farewell to Jeanne, we celebrate a life abundantly lived and a spirit that will continue to inspire.
