Jon

February 6, 1967 — February 22, 2024

Jonathan Edward Lowin, known affectionately as Jon to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at his home in Hammondsport, NY, on February 22, 2024. Born in the midst of a snowstorm in Syracuse, NY, on February 6, 1967, Jon's entrance into the world was as remarkable as the life he lived. He was a beacon of kindness and an exemplary figure in the community, leaving behind a legacy of love and service.

Jon is predeceased by his parents, Albert and Emily Bell Lowin. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his beloved wife of 34 years, Lynda, and their children, Matthew & Megan, Aaron & Lauren, and Natalie, as well as his adored grandson Parker. His brothers, Bruce Lowin and David Lowin, along with their families, and Lynda's siblings, Dawn Jaros, Luanne Babcock, and Richard Babcock, with their families, also survive him. Jon's impact extended beyond his family to a loving community of students, colleagues, neighbors, and friends who felt his warmth and care.

A graduate of Tioga Central High School, Jon met his future wife, Lynda, and together they embarked on a journey of love and companionship. He furthered his education at Buffalo State College and Ball State University, where he trained as a technology teacher. For 33 years, Jon shared his passion for learning with his students. He became a pillar of education at Hammondsport High School for 27 years, where his dedication shined not only in the classroom but also in his commitment to coaching boys' basketball, fostering the STEM program, and leading the Robotics team.

His influence on his students was profound, and his dedication to their growth and success was unwavering.

Jon's interests were a reflection of his love for life and his community. An avid bicyclist, he accomplished the remarkable feat of riding around all 11 Finger Lakes. His green thumb was evident in his beautifully tended floral and vegetable gardens, grapevines, and apple trees. But more than anything, Jon cherished the moments spent with his family, engaging in serendipitous adventures and creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Those who knew Jon would describe him as loving, faith-filled, and gentle—a man whose actions were guided by his deep faith in Jesus Christ. "For it is in giving that we receive," St. Francis of Assisi wisely said, a sentiment that Jon embodied wholeheartedly. He used his blessings to bless others, and in doing so, he showed what it truly meant to care for others selflessly. His faith was not just a belief but a way of life that he shared through his kindness and generosity.

The legacy Jon leaves behind is one of care and love. He cared for people like no one else, with friends, family, neighbors, and students at the heart of his world. His life was a testament to the power of caring for all people, a reflection of his belief that everyone deserved kindness and support.

All are invited to attend a memorial service at the Hammondsport Central School Auditorium on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 3 pm with Pastor Grace Warren, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 – 3 pm at the school. Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting his guestbook at www.sutfinfuneralchapel.com
