Kathryn L. Slater

of Owego, NY

Kathryn L. "Kate" Slater, a cherished matriarch and a beacon of warmth, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2024, at the age of 96 at the Riverview Manor Nursing Home in Owego, NY. Born on July 26, 1927, in Nichols, NY, Kate lived a life marked by love, laughter, and an unforgettable homemade touch that brought joy to everyone she knew.

Kate's legacy is carried on by her loving children Richard Jr. and Rose Slater, James Arthur and Laura Slater, David and Linda Slater, Sharon and Bob Snedeker, Eric Slater and Scott Siwicki, Teresa Cluff, and Judson and Ann Howe. Her spirited laughter will resonate in the memories of her grandchildren Andrew and Sarah Slater, Jamie Mendelis, Joe Slater, Melissa and Ashley Slater, Steven, Samantha, and Rebekah Snedeker, Jason and Kyle Howe, Doug, Bob, Greg, and Stephanie Nichols. Her zest for life and her recipes will be passed down through her 26 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Her brother Gerald "Buster" Nye, sister-in-law Linda Slater, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families will also hold dear the many moments of joy she brought into their lives.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard F. Slater, Sr., who passed away on October 12, 2005, Kate is now reunited with him and her parents John and Helen (Morse) Nye, as well as her siblings Doris Dutton, Lucille Westover, Eleanor Goodwin, Marylou Crownshield, Ken Nye, Donald Nye and a granddaughter Dawn Nichols.

Kate was renowned for her culinary creations, especially her "Kate's Beans," her famous cheesecake, brown bread, and chocolate chip cookies. She was a master at the puzzle table and a fierce competitor in card games, lovingly known as "Sharky" by those who played Sets & Runs with her during family gatherings. The first day of hunting season was always special in the Slater household, as Kate would prepare a homemade breakfast followed by a hearty chili lunch—a tradition that her family looked forward to year after year.

Her garden was her sanctuary, where she cultivated not just plants, but joy and laughter. A lover of nature, Kate found solace in her garden, watching the birds and squirrels, and cherished the outings with her children at Hickories Park. Kate was a natural jokester, whose sense of humor and playful spirit never failed to light up a room. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her family, creating memories that would last for generations.

Described by those who knew her as loving, friendly, and gentle, Kate's presence was a comforting constant in the lives of her family and friends. Her ability to connect and care deeply for others was reflective of the well-known quote by Mother Teresa, "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." Kate's life was a testament to the power of doing small things with great love, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched.

Kate's passing is not just a loss, but a celebration of a life lived to its fullest, with every moment infused with love and kindness. Her spirit will continue to guide and inspire her family, as they remember the wonderful woman who taught them the true meaning of family, love, and the simple joys of life.

Friends and family are invited to gather for a period of visitation on Saturday, March 23, from 10 to 11 am at the Nichols Presbyterian Church, 140 Main St., Nichols. A celebration of Kate's life will follow at 11 am, officiated by Pastor George Budine and Pastor Bobby Harris. Kate will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Nichols Cemetery, leaving a legacy of love and fond memories.

Her life was a testament to the virtues of being loving, friendly, and gentle. Kate's story will be cherished and shared, keeping her spirit alive for generations to come.
