LaVerne R. Scott, Jr., affectionately known to many as "Skip," passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Tioga Center home on November 26, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on July 8, 1946, in Hornell, NY, Skip was a man of kindness, friendliness, and incredible handiness, whose presence was a blessing to all who knew him.
Skip was a proud graduate of Owego Free Academy, class of 1964, a place where not only did he receive his education but also where he caught the eye of his future wife, Nancy. Skip and Nancy shared a beautiful life together until her passing on August 9, 2024. Their love story was one for the ages, filled with mutual respect, adventure, and unwavering support.
For 18 years, Skip was the reliable mechanic at Owego Agway, where his expertise and friendly banter were much appreciated. He then channeled his passion for mechanics and service into his own venture, Valley Mower Service. Skip wasn't just a businessman; he was a friend to his customers, often traveling far and wide to ensure their yards were well-kept, and their equipment was in top shape.
Skip's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, taking to the countryside with the wind in his hair and adventure in his heart. A fan of NASCAR, Skip enjoyed the thrill of the race and the camaraderie of fellow fans. He was also deeply invested in exploring his roots through genealogy, tracing the stories of his ancestors with great care and interest.
Those who knew Skip will fondly remember his morning visits to Jen's, where over breakfast, he and his friends would engage in lively discussions, humorously claiming to solve all the world's problems before the last coffee refill.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Amy Jo (Robert) Hodges and Dawn M. Davidson; his cherished grandchildren, Amanda, Nikole, David, Ryan, Joshua, and Carly; and several great-grandchildren who will miss their grandfather's gentle nature and warm embrace. Skip also leaves behind his brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Pat Scott, James and Sheryl Scott, Brian and Misty Scott; his sister Judy Scott; and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. His feline companion, Arvin, will surely miss his gentle touch and quiet company. Skip was welcomed into heaven by his parents, Betty Jean (Rogers) and LaVerne R. Scott, Sr., his beloved wife, Nancy (Card) Scott, his daughter Wendy Scott, and his grandson Frederick.
