Lonni Stephen Whitmore
of Nichols
Lonni Stephen Whitmore, affectionately known as Lon, passed away on February 23, 2024, at the age of 48.
Born on May 20, 1975, in Waverly, NY, Lon's zest for life and his infectious laughter left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Lon is survived by his devoted wife and companion of 12 years, Samantha (Swansbrough) Whitmore, and their beloved children: Hailey, Grayson, Bentley, Cory, Dominic, Tyson and Sydney . His legacy of love also lives on through his mother and step-father Bonnie and Keith Fairlie; his siblings, Gary and Nicole Whitmore, and Jamie Whitmore; as well as his adoring nieces and nephews: Adeline, Zander, Ryder, Rylyn, and Brooklyn. Samantha's extended family, along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends, will forever cherish the memories they made with Lon. He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Whitmore on July 17, 2016.
A proud alumnus of Tioga Central High School's class of 1993, Lon's work ethic shone brightly throughout his career as a long-time employee of Wagner Lumber. His dedication to his job was matched only by the passion he demonstrated in his personal endeavors.
As an avid quad racer, Lon's name became synonymous with victory at the Owego Speedway and Action Park East, where he claimed back-to-back championships in 2021 and 2022. His knack for winning was unmatched, and his competitive spirit was admired by many in the racing community. Off the track, Lon found solace in the quiet thrill of deer hunting with his bow, a pastime that allowed him to connect with nature and the simpler pleasures of life.
Known for his sharp wit, Lon was the quintessential smart ass, prankster, and a master at picking on people in the most endearing way. His life was a vibrant tapestry of adventure, always seeking the next thrill or opportunity to make someone laugh. It was often said that to know Lon was to love him, for his heart was as big as his sense of humor.
Those who knew Lon would describe him as loving, adventurous, and undeniably funny. He embraced life with open arms and a mischievous twinkle in his eye, ensuring that every moment was filled with joy and laughter. As Mark Twain once said, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started." Lon embodied this spirit, always jumping headfirst into life's adventures and encouraging others to do the same.
Lon's memory will be treasured like the rarest of gems, shining brightly in the hearts of those he leaves behind. His stories will be retold, his jokes will continue to bring smiles, and his legacy of love and adventure will inspire generations to come. Lon Whitmore's life was a celebration of the human spirit, and his memory will be honored as a beacon of light that continues to guide the way for all who knew him.
As we say goodbye to Lon, we are reminded that while his physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit remains eternal. In every roaring engine at the speedway, in the serene silence of the woods, and in every playful jest shared among friends, Lon's presence will be felt, reminding us to live fully, laugh often, and love without reservation. We will gather for a period of visitation on Saturday, March 2nd from 11-4 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A luncheon will follow at the Pumpelly House in Owego.
