Marguerite M. Roeper, 86, of Sayre, Pa and formerly of Greenville, Orange County, NY; passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Marguerite was born on June 22, 1928 in Boston, MA a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Margrit (Akeret) Groh. She was a graduate of Middletown High School and the Manhattan Trade School in New York City. On April 24, 1949 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Middletown, NY she married Louis William Roeper, III and together they celebrated 65 years of marriage. For twenty-five years, Marguerite and Louis owned and operated Marlu Costumes, a Theatrical Costume rental business. Many of the costumes were shipped all over the United States, Europe and the Far East. In 1981, they sold the business to their daughter and son-in-law, Hazel and John Goldstein and in 2007 they celebrated with them 50 years of business. Devoted to her community, Marguerite served various local government positions ~ she was active on the Greenville Township Ethics Committee from 1979-1982. In addition, she served on the Greenville Township Parkland Committee form 1982-1987 and was successful in securing the first government grant to start Parkland development. She also served as Town Supervisor of Greenville, Orange County, NY from 1983-1988; and was a member of the Orange County Supervisors and Legislators Association. Believing in the youth of the community, Marguerite was a Orange County 4-H Leader for 17 years; Orange County 4-H Leaders Association where she served as President and Treasurer and in 1979 received the Orange County 4-H Leader of the Year; active member of the American Cancer Society for 27 years ~ served on the board of directors for 11 years both in New York and Pennsylvania; twenty year member of the Lenten Sewing Club in Middletown, NY ~ serving as Past President and Treasurer; member of the Otisville Country Garden Club ~ serving as Vice President and Treasurer; Charter member of the Minisink Valley P. T. A.. Marguerite enjoyed playing the organ, and was a contestant and winner of the Yamaha Hobbyist Division ~ placing 1st place for 4 years running from 1974 - 1977; distinguished Performance Award in 1976 at the Yamaha Regional Festival in Washington, DC. In 1992, Marguerite was a founding member of the Legacy of the Valley; founding member of the Windham Township Volunteers; an active member of the Windham Township Ladies Aid ~ serving as secretary since 2000. Charter and active member of the Windham Community Fire Dept #28 Auxiliary. Marguerite was the recipient of the Windham Fire Chief's Award for community service in 2005, Windham Township Citizen of the Year in 2006. Many will remember Marguerite for the beautiful music shared at Tina Picket's Senior Expo; the Antique Car Show in Owego; and playing at five nursing homes and two hospitals in Bradford and Tioga Counties. Marguerite was a fifty year member and leader in St. John's Lutheran Church in Middletown, NY where she served on the Altar Guild, Green Thumbs, Fellowship Chapter 17 and was instrumental in raising funds for the new church. She and Louis were also members of the St. John Lutheran Church in Sayre ~ she was active in the woman's circles, served as Editor of the church newsletter, and instrumental in organizing many of the church activities while there. Marguerite is survived by her husband of 65 years, Louis William Roeper at home; her children ~ daughter and son-in-law: Hazel (Roeper) and John D. Goldstein of Port Jervis, NY; Andrew P. and Chase W. Roeper of Lyndborough, New Hampshire; Susan (Roeper) and Thomas A. Monaco, of Catlett, Va; her grandchildren and their spouses: Jacqueline M. Goldstein and Lev Tsenovoy of NYC; Brian P. and Joanna Goldstein of Middletown, NY; Cassandra and David Miller of Christianburg, VA; Nick T. Monaco of Arlington, Va; great grandchildren: Thomas and Andrew Miller; Rylynne Goldstein; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Albert and Ruth Roeper of Yardley, Pa ; David Bowman of Williamstown, MA; Ann Roeper of Middletown, NY. Many nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Marguerite was predeceased by her parents Joseph A. and Margrit Groh; and a sister Helen Freedman. A memorial service and celebration of Marguerite's life well lived will be held at a later date.
