Maritza “Hedy” Mendez, 79, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2022 in Athens, PA. Hedy was born December 30, 1942 at Saint Vincent’s Hospital, New York, NY. Her parents were John Mendez and Domingua Carro. She was baptized at the Church of Our Lady Of Guadalupe, New York, NY on April 18, 1943.
Hedy leaves behind her only son, Mario Bobet, and his wife Deidre Bobet. Also, surviving are her grandchildren, Style Bobet of Brooklyn, NY, Bryan “Jagger” Schuster of Slatington, PA, and Donovan Wynn of Sayre, PA.
Hedy grew up in New York City, where she was active in the Roller Derby in her teen years. She also enjoyed singing and dancing. She worked in the Food Service Industry for many years, and, boy could she cook! Later, she worked as an Emergency Medical Technician and provided Home Care. She spent about sixteen years in Puerto Rico, before joining her son, Mario Bobet, and his family in Sayre, PA in January 2017.
Hedy was fun-loving, and compassionate. She genuinely cared about people, and would often give away whatever she had, if she thought someone needed it more.
Her favorite hobby was being on the computer. Whether communicating with international pen pals, learning new languages, listening to music or playing games, we often joked that she was on her computer more than her teenage grandsons.
Hedy was witty and had a great sense of humor. She loved to laugh. And although, she wasn’t very tall, she knew how to stand her ground. She would defend and protect those she cared for with the fierceness of a giant.
Hedy lived at the Page Manor from February 2020 – April 2022, where she made a lot of friends. I know that she missed her home at the Page Manor and the friends that she made there. After a brief hospitalization, she transitioned to the Athens Health & Rehabilitation Center, where she remained until her death. The family wishes to thank all the staff at the Athens Health & Rehabilitation Center for loving Hedy and taking such great care of her these last several months. It was evident that she loved you all.
Consistent with Hedy’s wishes, there will be no public services. To honor Hedy’s memory, be intentional in being gracious, kind and generous to others, especially those less fortunate than yourself. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at sutfinfuneralchapel.com
