Mary Elaine Mcneil

Mary Elaine McNeil, 89, of Nichols and formerly of Penn Yan, passed away on Monday evening, December 30, 2013 at the Elderwood Healthcare Facility in Waverly. Elaine as she was known by her family and friends was born on March 12, 1924 in Nichols a daughter of Clayton F. and Irene E. (Zorn) McNeil. She was a graduate of Owego Free Academy Class of 1941 and in 1948 she graduated from Syracuse University. In 1948, Elaine started her teaching career in Home Economics for Sauquoit, NY until 1951. In 1951-1965 she worked at the Yates County Cooperative Extension office. In 1965, she returned to teaching home economics at Penn Yan Academy until her retirement in June 1979. Elaine "Aunt Honey" is survived by her brother-in-law Raymond Berry; her nephews David Berry and Ellie Goodenough; Dan and Julie Berry and family all of Nichols. She was predeceased by her sister Lucille Berry on October 31, 2006. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Saturday, January 4th from 1 to 2 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A funeral service and celebration of her life will follow at 2 pm with Pastor Jon L. Austin, officiating. Interment will be held in the spring in the Riverside Cemetery, Lounsberry.
