Mercy

October 31, 1933 — November 14, 2024

Mercedes "Mercy" Strope, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully at her home on November 14, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on October 31, 1933, in Halstead, Pennsylvania, she was the cherished daughter of Walter and Frances (Boardman) Conklin. Mercy lived a life marked by devotion to her family, unwavering faith, and an enduring spirit of community service.

In June 1954, Mercy wed the love of her life, Gerald "Pete" Strope, their union was blessed with love and laughter for 58 years until Pete's passing on February 17, 2012. Mercy's legacy continues through her loving family: son and daughter-in-law Matt and Cheryl Strope of West Warren, Pennsylvania; daughter Brenda L. Harwood of Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and four plus one on the way great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Don Jones of California, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom held a special place in her heart.

Mercy was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband Pete; brothers Walter Conklin, Jr., and Verus "Doc" (Liz) Conklin; sisters Mary Jones and Lena "Toni" (Carl) Pendleton; and a grandson, David Taylor.

Mercy graduated from Vestal High School in the class of 1951, and throughout her life, she treasured her family above all. Her work history and involvement in associations reflected her commitment to her community and her love for fellowship. As a faithful member of the West Warren Congregational Church, she served as Treasurer of the Ladies Aid for 19 years. Her dedication to service also shone through her role as Treasurer of the Warren Center Volunteer Fire Ladies Auxiliary for seven years. Her interests were varied and community-focused. Mercy was a proud member of the Warren Center Red Hatters, where she enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship of her fellow members. She played Bunko with friends for many years, shared valuable moments with the Warren Center Senior Citizens, and was an enthusiastic member of a Ladies Bowling team.

Loving, friendly, and faith-filled—these words paint but a humble portrait of Mercy. She treasured her family above all earthly possessions and led a life rich in the fruits of the Spirit. As the Bible states, "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." (1 Corinthians 13:13, NIV). Mercy embodied this divine truth through every act of kindness, every prayer whispered, and every soul she touched.
