Merle L. Rogers

Merle L. Rogers, 85, of West River Road, Nichols passed away at his home peacefully in his sleep on Saturday morning, May 15, 2010. Merle was born on August 20, 1924 in Waverly, NY a son of the late Leon and Bessie (Strope) Rogers. He was a veteran of the US Army and proudly served his country during the World War II. Merle enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors. He was a talented woodworker and enjoyed handcrafting lighthouses and lawn decorations. In addition he also had a successful firewood business. Merle is survived by his wife Estella (Welfel) Rogers; his children: Kenneth (Cathy) Rogers of Smithboro; Leon (Debbie) Rogers of Nichols; Donna (Bill) Crigger of Jacksonville, Fla; Marie Short of Tioga Center; Judy Schafenberg of Nichols; Harold Arthur Rogers, of Ga; a sister Pearl Allis of Sun City, Fla; his grandchildren: John Merrill; Mindi Rogers, Greg Rogers, Scott Rogers, David Rogers, Bryan Short, Danielle Tyer, Tammy Holt, Eric Schafenberg, Sheila Gann, Mike Ingersoll and Todd Ingersoll; numerous great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Merle was predeceased by his brothers Kenneth, Arthur, Ervin and Walter Rogers. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of Merle's life on Tuesday, May 18th at 11 am at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols with Pastor Donna Martin, officiating. A period of visitation and time of sharing memories will be held on Tuesday from 10 am until the time of the service.
