Merton L. Powell

August 15, 1921 — June 7, 2008

When someone you love becomes a memory…..the memory becomes a treasure. Well known and respected life long resident of Warren Center, Merton L. Powell, 86, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Towanda Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 15, 1921 in Warren Center, a son of the late Arthur H. and Angie (Bowen) Powell. Merton attended school in Warren Center and was a graduate of LeRaysville High School. For many years he was employed at Stackmore Furniture Company in Owego, NY and the Endicott Forging Company in Endicott, NY. In addition, he found time to own and operate the family dairy farm in Warren Center. He was a founding member of the Warren Township Fire Department and will be greatly missed for the upcomming Field Days. He enjoyed going square dancing and being with his "circle of friends" Merton also enjoyed attending county fairs where he could watch horse pulls and listen to country music. Although he found the greatest pleasure being surrounded by his family and friends. He always looked forward to family outings and treasured the time everyone could join him at his cabin. The community of Warren Center will greatly miss this wonderful man and friend. Merton is survived by his loving and caring companion Charlotte Petty of Warren Center, Pa; his sons and daughters-in-law: Donald and JoAnn Powell of Marysville, Pa; Richard and Mary Powell of Athens, Pa; David and Melanie Powell of St. Augustine, Fla; seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, Charlotte's extended family, many close friends and numerous cousins also survive. A celebration of Merton's and time of remembering the special gift he was to all of us will be held on Thursday, June 12th at 2 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 South Main St., Nichols. A period of visitation and sharing memories will be held on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral chapel. A period of visitation will also be held on Thursday from 1 pm until the time of the service at 2.
