Michael Jon Sawyer, affectionately known as Mikey, MJ or Sach to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024, in Sayre, Pa following a brief illness. Born on March 16, 1972, to Jon "Jack" Sawyer and Phyllis Ann Middleton Sawyer, Mikey was a beacon of light and love to all who knew him.
Mike was a proud graduate of Tioga Central High School, Class of 1990, where he was a valued member of the bowling team. He furthered his education by earning an Associate's Degree in Accounting from Broome Community College.
Following his graduation, Mike channeled his entrepreneurial spirit and love for his community into his business, Mike's Showtime & Floral Shop. The shop became a beloved local establishment, known for its Slush Puppies and video rentals, and was a testament to his commitment to bringing joy to those around him. His work was not limited to his business; Mike was an active member of the Nichols Fire Department and once served as an EMT, roles in which he demonstrated his unwavering desire to help others.
Mike's interests and hobbies were a reflection of his vibrant and engaging personality. An avid bowler, he maintained a high bowling average and enjoyed the thrill of competition. His love for television was evident in his enthusiasm for shows like Fox News, Jeopardy, America's Got Talent, and WWE Wrestling, which he eagerly watched on Mondays and Fridays. Mike was also a passionate fan of the New York Yankees, making it a tradition to attend their Old Timer's Game each year, and he cheered on the New York Giants with equal fervor.
Mike's family was the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his loving sister and brother-in-law, Marcy and Steve Hill; his niece, Kelly (Patrick) Hildebrant; his nephew, Kinser Hill; and his great-niece and nephew, Aubrey and Collin. His caregiver, Richard Yahn, Sr.; his aunts and uncles, Karen Horton, Bob and Sherry Middleton, Joe and Donna Middleton, Bill and Mary Ellen Middleton, Ronald Chase; his stepmother, Lucy Sawyer-Stone. Several cousins among them special cousins, Jeffery Middleton and Tim Humpal, were like brothers to him and share in the loss of this remarkable man. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Jon "Jack" Sawyer and Phyllis Ann Middleton Sawyer; his aunt Gail Chase and Marlene Humpal; and his paternal grandparents, Howard and Hilda Sawyer, and maternal grandparents, Wesley and Pauline Middleton.
Those who knew Mike would describe him as loving, gentle, and friendly. His presence could light up a room, and his kind-hearted nature made him a cherished friend and beloved community member. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
