Milfurd W. (Jimmy) Youngs 93, of Nichols, NY, formerly of Elmira, NY, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2015 after a period of declining health. Jimmy was born July 29, 1921 at home in Clymer, Pa., to Fred and Lolly (Moon) Youngs. Jim enlisted in the Army on June 3, 1940 and into active service on February 17, 1941. Jimmy served as an Ambulance driver and was present for the battles in Normandy (D-Day), Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 4 Bronze stars. He found it very difficult to discuss his war experience. After being honorably discharged on September 26, 1945 Jimmy began his employment at Corning Glass Corporation as a Gapher. Jimmy retired in 1983 from Corning Incorporated and married Rita Ellen Chambers of Nichols, NY, formerly of Sayre, Pa. They enjoyed a long retirement together gardening, camping in the area with their friends, enjoying the fire. In the early years they spent most of their winters in Florida. Together they were loving grandparents. Jimmy was an active member of the Nichols United Methodist Church for many years. Jimmy was predeceased by Rita, his wife of 31 years, in August 2014. Jimmy has two step-daughters: Cheryl (Cliff) Signor of Whitney Point, NY and Sheila (Tom) Jennings of Vestal, NY; two step-sons: Michael (Denise) Chambers of Nichols, NY and Charles (Kathleen) Chambers of Nichols, NY; one sister-in-law, Louise (Gene) Benson of Gillette, PA; one brother-in-law Howard (Mary) Gallow of Ballwin, MO; eight step-grandchildren: Shannon (Doug) Prough, Matthew Chambers, Nicholas (Trish) Chambers, Maureen Jennings, Kyla (Tim) Baker, Sarah Smith, Julie Chambers and Cassie Chambers. Jimmy has thirteen great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. There will be a private service at the convenience of the family. Final arrangements are being entrusted to Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 South Main Street, Nichols, NY 13812.
