Beatrice J. Horton, affectionately known as "Petie" by her loved ones, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2025, at the Elderwood at Tioga Nursing Home in Waverly, NY. Born on October 3, 1940, in Sayre, Pennsylvania, she was a beacon of light in her community and a personification of love and kindness throughout her 84 years.

Petie grew up in a bustling household as the only girl among her siblings. Her brothers lovingly bestowed upon her the nickname "Petie," a name that would become a symbol of her unique place in the family. She grew up in the town of Barton and was a proud graduate of the Tioga Central High School class of 1958. At the tender age of 16, she was crowned "Queen of Barton," a title that foretold the regal kindness and grace she carried throughout her life.

Her warm presence and diligent work ethic were well-known at Tioga Central, where she served as a school monitor aid. Petie's colleagues and friends will remember her as a pillar of support and a friendly face to all who passed through the doors.

Petie's life was a tapestry of love and dedication, she is survived by her husband of nearly 66 years, Duane R. Horton, and their loving children: Debbie and Jeff Sherman; Howard and Pam Horton; Jack and Stacy Horton. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren: Christina (Ralph) Ulrich, Ryan (Val) Lunger, Brittney (Andy) Race; Breanna (Mike) Potenza; Becca Horton, Megan Horton, Audrey Horton , Luke Horton, Derek Horton, Dylan (Kara) Horton and Lauren (Tre) Donson. She took immense joy in her 15 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her spirit of generosity and love. Petie was the treasured sister of Gerry Gowan and sisters-in-law Paulette Gowan and Lois Gowan. Numerous nieces, nephews, and their families also survive her, each touched by her gentle nature. She now joins in peace her parents Arthur and Alberta Gowan, her beloved son David Horton, and her brothers Don, Jim, Dick, Bob, and Jack Gowan.

Her family meant the world to her, and she created a home where everyone felt welcomed and cherished. Known for her culinary skills, Petie's chocolate cake was the highlight of many family gatherings, and her Sunday dinners, featuring roast beef and all the trimmings, were legendary. Her creativity and love for life shone through her hobbies. She enjoyed golfing, dancing the Polka with her husband Duane, and participating with her friends at the Wednesday Craft group. Her involvement with the Little Meadows United Methodist Church was a testament to her faith and her commitment to fellowship.

Petie's friends and family will remember her for her loving nature, her kind heart, and her creative soul. She had the unique ability to make each person feel special, and her home was always filled with laughter, joy, and the aroma of delicious food. She lived by the words of Mother Teresa, "Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier," a quote that perfectly encapsulates the essence of Petie's life.
