Richard C. Babcock, 73, of Horseheads and formerly of Smithboro went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday morning, January 10, 2008 at his home. Dick as he was affectionately known by his family and friends was born on September 3, 1934 in Dryden, New York, a son of the late Helga (Larson) and John G. Babcock, Sr. Dick was a graduate of Owego Free Academy Class of 1952. He was a veteran of the US Army and proudly served his country in Korea. On October 20, 1962 he married Joan (Hanna) Babcock. He was a retired employee of IBM Endicott and Owego where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. In addition he served as Town of Tioga Assessor. Following his retirement, Dick went to work at Stateline Auto Auction for many years. He was a member of the local Legions and Veterans Clubs and the Nichols United Methodist Church where he participated with the church choir. Dick loved to sing and participated in many area Barbershop Quartets. He also enjoyed playing a round of golf, bowling and playing cards with his Monday Card Club friends, although, his greatest pleasure was being surrounded by his family and friends. Dick is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years Joan; his son and daughter-in-law: Richard C. Jr and Beth Babcock; daughters and sons-in-law: Luanne Weslow; Dawn and David Jaros; Lynda and Jonathan Lowin; brother Philip (Nancy) Babcock, sister: Kathleen (Barry) Malonis; sister-in-law Betty Babcock; brother-in-law John Rodgers; his grandchildren: Jacyann, Elise, Danielle, Nicole, Stephanie, Paul, Matthew, Aaron, and Natalie. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends also survive. Dick was predeceased by his parents; brother John G. Babcock, Jr. and sister Barbara Babcock Rodgers. A time of remembering the special gift Dick was to all of us will be held on Monday, January 14, 2008 at 11 am at the United Methodist Church, Nichols with his pastor, Rev. Dan Martin and Rev. Ted Roloson, officiating. Interment will follow in the Smithboro Cemetery. A period of visitation and sharing memories will be held on Sunday, January 13th from 2 to 5 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 South Main St., Nichols. A period of visitation will also be held on Monday, from 10 am until the time of the service at the church.
