When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me, remember the love that we have shared and that will comfort thee…..Richard D. Bennett, 80, of West River Rd., passed away on Friday, March 7, 2008 at the Elcor Health Care Facility, Horseheads. A life long and well respected resident of Nichols, Dick as he was affectionately known by his family and friends was born on February 3, 1928 a son of Leona (Rogers) and the late Al R. Bennett. Dick was a graduate of Nichols High School Class of 1945. Following high school he enlisted into the US Navy and where he proudly served his country. Following an honorable discharge he went to work for the Lehigh Valley Railroad as a Brakeman. He retired following 25 years of service from the Conrail Railroad. Dick was a lifetime member of the Glen A. Warner Post 1371, Nichols American Legion Post 1624 and was former member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Owego. Dick enjoyed spending time with his family at "Davenport Acres" He also enjoyed his tractors and had a great love for quarter horses. Dick is survived by his wife: Sandra Bennett; his mother Leona Bennett; both of Nichols; daughter Rebecca and Sean Gorman of Waverly; his sons and daughters-in-law: Alan and Jan Bennett of Nichols; Dale and Becky Bennett of Schnecksville, Pa; Randy and Dee Bennett of Nichols; Scott and Barbarann Bennett of Athens, Pa; stepchildren: Valerie Harman of Orlando, Fla; Scott and Linda Berry of Rome, Pa; Vickie and Elliott Niman of Chenango Forks, NY; James and Linda Berry of LeRaysville, Pa; his sister Barbara Bennett of Nichols; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Patricia Bennett of Smithboro; Shirley Baldwin of Waverly; Kathy and Richard Chilson of North Orwell, Pa; Charles and Sue Alger of Nichols; Philip and Teresa Alger of Waverly; Kenny and Linda Alger of West Chester, OH; his special grandchildren: Amy and Mickey Clinard, Travis Bennett and his fianc Britt Heggland; Lauren and Meredith Bennett; Ashley and Kristin Bennett; David and Kim Bennett; Michelle and Eugene Chavez, Lynsey Bennett; Meghan and Kevin Gorman; several step grandchildren; his great grandchildren: Sydney, Hailey, Ryan, Jordan, Kendall and Elias. Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Dick was predeceased by his first wife Eileen (Alger) Bennett on April 20, 1998; his brother Lester "Tuffy" Bennett and sister and brother-in-law Connie and Leo Lawrence. A time of remembering and celebration of Dick's life will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 12 noon at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 South Main St., Nichols. A period of visitation and sharing memories will be held on Monday, March 10th from 4 to 8 pm at the funeral chapel and on Tuesday from 11 until the time of the service at noon.
