Richard W. Canzler

Softly in the morning, you heard a gentle call, you took the hand God offered you and quietly left us all.... Surrounded by his family, Richard W. Canzler, 93, of Barton, NY went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday morning, May 22, 2018 at the Elderwood Healthcare Center in Waverly. Richard was born on August 5, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY a son of the late Eugene and Catherine (Koch) Canzler. He proudly served his country during WWII with the US Navy. On June 2, 1956 he married Josephine Schweiger and together they have shared nearly sixty-two years of marriage. Richard was a retired employee of the US Postal Service and served as a rural route carrier in Rome and Nichols. He was a member of the St. James Catholic Church, the Moose and Barton Seniors. An avid stamp collector, Richard also enjoyed gardening and visiting area restaurants. His greatest treasure was being surrounded by his family. Richard will be greatly missed by his wife Josie; his sons and daughters-in-law: Mark and Amy Canzler; Andy and Nina Canzler all of Barton; his precious grandchildren: Abby, Joshua and Julia His sisters and brother-in-law: Theresa and George Riley; Elizabeth "Betty" Dixon; a sister-in-law: Donna Schweiger; several nieces and nephews among them Fred, Jamie and Greg Schweiger and their families. Richard was predeceased by his parents Eugene and Catherine Canzler; and brothers Eugene and Ray. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Friday, May 25th from 10 to 12 pm at St. James Church, Chemung Street, Waverly. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 pm with Father Thomas Valenti. Interment and prayers of committal will be in the St. James Cemetery, Waverly.
